Dear Year 7 2022 Families,

Welcome to ASPIRE, our newsletter for future families highlighting a wide range of successes, activities and events that have occurred in recent times at Mt St Michael’s College.

It is our hope that this newsletter will provide an opportunity for you to familiarise yourselves with Mt St Michael’s College as your daughters prepare to transition from Primary School.   We are looking forward to welcoming your daughter and I would like to highlight the following important event dates in your calendar
  • Thursday 12 August:  Year 7 2022 Orientation Day 9.00 am – 11.00 am in the Sophia Centre
  • Friday 3 September:  Year 7 2022 Assessment for Teaching and Learning 8.30 am – 12 noon.
The information regarding the Orientation Program will be emailed out to families at the end of the first week of Term 3, 2021.  It is our expectation that we will be able to host parents and their daughters on-site.

It is an absolute pleasure for me to share our successes of our girls with you. I encourage you to take the time to share this news together with your daughter.

In Faith and Love

Message from Year 7 Pastoral Leader

Welcoming Year 7 students to Mt St Michael’s College is an exciting time for all our community. Whilst we hope that your daughter is eagerly awaiting her time here, we also understand that the change from primary to secondary school is a significant one. To support this milestone in your daughter’s life, our Year 7 students experience a holistic transition process which begins in their final year of primary school where they are given two opportunities to come into the College as a cohort. During their first week of Year 7, your daughters will partake in a number of transition activities designed to support their understanding of every facet of Mt St Michael’s life to ensure they are ready to become immersed in the academic, mission, wellbeing and co-curricular experiences that our College provides.

I look forward to meeting our Year 7 2022 students.

Introducing our Year 7 Term 2 Homeroom Captains

We challenge all our students to demonstrate attributes of servant leadership within our community. One way our younger grades can demonstrate this is through our Homeroom Captain role.  In Year 7, we have two Captains per Homeroom, per term. The responsibility of the captains is to work with their Homeroom Teacher and Pastoral Leader to support whole school initiatives, lead daily prayer and notices, maintain the homestudy noticeboard and support their peers. Our current Term 2 Captains are outstanding examples of Mt St Michael’s students and have embraced their role this term.

Year 7 2021 Students First Day

We offered a heartfelt welcome to our Year 7 students, who are embarking on a new and exciting journey; to explore new realms of learning, develop new skills, form friendships and be happy, healthy and confident. Here's a look back at their smiling faces on their first day at MSM.
2021 Seniors Theme
Earlier this year the Year 12 students launched their 2021 theme "Let’s Get IT Done in 2021". The College Captains explained ... IT stands for Individual’s Together.

"We want to see your individual passions, goals and dreams flourish this year with the support and togetherness of the united MSM community. We encourage you to consider what your 'IT' is and take steps to achieve this goal."

Mother Daughter High Tea Celebrating International Women's Day

On Friday 12 March we gathered as a community for our International Women’s Day High Tea and what a fabulous afternoon at the Royal Convention Centre it was! The event was a great success. Our community generously donated during the event, raising $6,600 towards the MSM Scholarship Fund.

Our special guest keynote speaker, Dr Catherine Shannon (Alumni 1986) was inspirational; speaking of her fond memories of her time at MSM, her clear passion for her vocation and the advice that she shared with our young women – have mentors, have champions and have heroes.

Commemorating ANZAC Day

As a community, we gathered for our liturgy to commemorate ANZAC Day; a day when Australians and New Zealanders give thanks for their free and peaceful countries.

In 2015 Pope Francis stated “The whole world is at war, and the rejection of the path of peace means that God Himself, that Jesus Himself, weeps.” These words of Pope Francis remind us of the tragedy and senselessness of war.

We remembered the loss of so many lives through war and the effect that war has on those who are left behind.
MSM students and staff proudly represented the College at the Ashgrove ANZAC Day March, honouring all Men and Women who have served for this country. Lest we forget.
Thank you to the many MSM future students who participated in our ANZAC Day wreath colouring activity, employing their fantastic creative skills. Congratulations on these wonderful submissions.
Inaugural Principal’s Honours Assembly
In February we hosted our inaugural Principal’s Honours Assembly to celebrate the academic achievements of our 2020 cohort. Thirty-three students were acknowledged as “Honour Students” - recognised for their excellence in achievement and commitment to their studies in their chosen pathway (either ATAR or Vocational Education). Each Honour Student was presented with a Principal’s Honour Award and signed the MSM Honour Roll.
Around the College
Micah Projects supporting the most vulnerable
MSM students and staff generously contributed to our Micah Projects during the course of Term 1, donating toiletries and other essential items which will be invaluable for women and families in temporary sheltered accommodation, after they escape from situations of domestic violence.
National Sorry Day
The MSM Social Justice Council championed the creation of a SORRY canvas for National Sorry Day. Students were invited to contribute by placing a handprint on the canvas which was proudly displayed in our Peace and Reconciliation Garden. Students paused to acknowledge the strength of Stolen Generations Survivors and reflect on how we can all play a part in the healing process for our people and nation.
Inter-House Swimming Carnival
Earlier this year, students participated in the MSM Inter-House Swimming Carnival. We were blessed with lots of sunshine which aided in the enthusiasm for the students to be involved in any event that meant they could get into the pool to cool off. All students enjoyed giving it a go and having a great time doing so!
CaSSSA Cup Swimming Carnival
We congratulated the MSM Swim Team on their remarkable performance at the CaSSSA Cup Swimming Carnival. They were “individuals together (IT)” at this event, in every sense of the word, chasing personal bests and team goals. We continue to celebrate being CaSSSA Percentage Cup Champions and third in the Aggregate Cup for 2021!
We hope that you enjoy our snapshot of life at MSM during Terms 1 and 2!
Year 7 Fundraising Fridays
Well done to our Year 7 cohort who actively participated in Fundraising Fridays during Term 1. Every Friday, for the course of six weeks, Year 7 students donated a gold coin and participated in activities such as crazy socks, trivia, scrunchies, guess the pom poms, Just Dance and Kahoot. Each week the girls were provided a video to view from Project Compassion to remind them of the reasons behind the fun and the power of their donations. The generosity and spirit that our newest community members have brought to these events, and other events around the College, demonstrates that the spirit of the Sisters of Charity is alive and well.
Dance Showcase
The MSM Dance Showcase welcomed Year 7-12 Dance and Co-Curricular Dance students to the stage, performing before a live audience. Dance students at MSM are exceptionally talented, making it a pleasure to see them perform and excel in a variety of genres, and styles, of dance. A selection of the dance works were performance tasks, challenging students to learn and demonstrate specific styles of dance. Other dance works were choreographic tasks, created by students to communicate a particular intent to the audience.
Year 7 and 11 Buddy Program
The MSM Buddy Program is an integral piece of our Flourishing Futures framework in supporting the wellbeing of our students. Year 11 students become buddies to Year 7 students, providing rich servant leadership opportunities to our older cohort and an important familiar face and source of knowledge to our newest arrivals.

Our first session saw the girls meeting and engaging in conversation to find out more about each other. Connections made in their initial meeting have strengthened through a range of activities in Terms 1 and 2 and will culminate in the coaching program in Terms 3 and 4.
Cross Country Camp
In preparation for the CaSSSA Cup Carnival, the MSM Cross Country Team went to Maranatha, Yandina to participate in team building activities. Students conquered the tower of tremble, a mid-ropes course, the giant swing, the leap of faith and enjoyed some yoga. A highlight of the camp was a dance battle where the activity groups battled it out. The camp culminated with team members running up Wild horse Mountain to determine the ‘Queens of the Mountain’ and reaping in the spectacular views of the Glasshouse Mountains and the surrounding area.
Writers Club Camp
The MSM Writers Club attended their annual camp at the YMCA Warrawee, Joyner. This year’s ‘Night of the Notables’ gave members the opportunity to not only explore the life of their chosen person but also how their choices framed their lives. It was a rich and wonderful twenty-four hours of writing, activities and sharing.
QC Netball
Both on and off the court, our MSM QC Netball teams made us proud! Our Open A team, competing in the Open A division, came 6th out of 16 teams. Special mention to our Junior A team who competed up an entire age group in the Intermediate A division and did amazingly well. All players were commended on their outstanding teamwork and hard work before and during the competition.
Australian Brain Bee Challenge
Congratulations to selected Year 10 students who completed round one of the Australian Brain Bee Challenge run by the Australasian Neuroscience Society. As a part of this challenge, students spent weeks learning about the brain, its function and impact on behaviour, in preparation for an online quiz.
TED-Ed Club
The TED-Ed Club offers students in Years 8 and 9 a hands-on opportunity to work on vital storytelling and communication skills. Students come together to discuss, research, present and celebrate creative ideas. Working with the College’s Film and Multimedia Club, students have their TED talks filmed and uploaded to the Student Talks channel on YouTube (TED-Ed Student Talks - YouTube) to have the opportunity to become influencers for a better world.
Food, Glorious Food! at MusicFest1

The “Food Glorious Food” live-streamed Co-Curricular Music Concert was a delicious treat for those at home to watch. Our students performed with energy and enthusiasm and it was clear they enjoyed the musical work they were performing. The program of gastronomically themed delights was challenging and the students showcased their ability beautifully.
