Dear Families

Welcome to ASPIRE, our newsletter for future families highlighting a wide range of successes, activities and events that have occurred in recent times at Mt St Michael’s College.

Our community has embraced the new ‘Covid-normal’ environment and we are enjoying our various sporting, cultural and mission activities. Our parent/caregiver functions such as our ‘Year 7 Welcome to MSM’ and our IWD Foundation High Tea have made welcome returns.

I encourage you to take the time to share these stories together with your daughter.

In Faith and Love

Ms Sharon Volp
Principal

Principal's Honours Assembly

We recently hosted our Principal’s Honours Assembly to celebrate the academic achievements of our 2021 cohort.

Twenty-four students were acknowledged as “Honour Students” - recognised for their excellence in achievement and commitment to their studies in their chosen pathway (either ATAR or Vocational Education).  Each Honour Student was presented with a Principal’s Honour Award and signed the MSM Honour Roll.

We have been absolutely delighted with the ATAR results of our 2021 graduates. The following data I am about to share with you is based on the 104 ATAR eligible students who have given permission for us to view their ATAR result:
  • 2% of students received an ATAR of 99 and above
  • 8% of students received an ATAR of 98 and above
  • 20% of students received an ATAR of 95 and above
  • 40% of students received an ATAR of 90 and above. This places them in the top 23.87% of the state.
We are also extremely proud of the achievements of our students who were involved in Vocational Education pathways or other alternative pathways last year.  Some of these students were also undertaking ATAR studies.
  • 18 students were awarded a Certificate II
  • 26 students were awarded a Certificate III
  • 2 students were awarded a Certificate IV
  • 9 students were awarded a Diploma
  • 1 student was completing a school-based traineeship.
Congratulations to the 2021 College Dux, Jasmine Armstrong. Jasmine was presented with two Queensland Certificate of Education Achievement Awards at the recent awards presentation.
  • Highest Achievement by an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Student
  • Distinguished Academic Achiever Award.
Jasmine has provided the following reflection and advice to our current students:

“My long-term goal is to specialise in cardiothoracic surgery, anaesthesiology or neurosurgery. I would like to give back to the community through working with organisations that provide services to those who would not otherwise be able to afford them.

“I have provisional entry into the Doctor of Medicine program at The University of Queensland. First, I’ll study for a degree in Health Sciences. My favourite subject was Mathematical Methods. I loved the problem-solving aspect; how I could rearrange and work a complex language down to a single solution.

Do your personal best; do not compare yourself to others because everyone has different strengths and there are many pathways to achieve your goals. Also choose subjects that interest you — you are more likely to achieve when you are engaged”.

We congratulate Jasmine and are very proud of her achievements.

We also had two students who were awarded the Top Subject Achievement Award in the State in the areas of Study of Religion and Dance.

Congratulations to Isabella Deegan who is the recipient of the Samuel Griffiths Scholarship for Griffith University.  Isabella is studying animation and this scholarship valued at $24 000 will provide wonderful financial support to her.

We had 98% of our students receive an offer from QTAC.  The most popular areas of study were:
  1. Health
  2. Society and Culture
  3. Natural and Physical Sciences
  4. Creative Arts
  5. Management and Commerce.
We are so proud of the achievements of the Class of 2021 and look forward to hearing more about their post-MSM journey in future years.

Senior Class Of 2022 Commissioning Ceremony

Earlier this year we congratulated our Year 12 Students, who were commissioned to lead our MSM community in 2022.  Our Principal Ms Volp said of our senior badges:

“The senior badge that you will wear on your tie sits over your heart, and is a symbol of the values of compassion, hope, justice and love that are the hallmarks of our community. When you put on your tie, hold these values in your heart and let them guide your work as you lead our community in Faith and Love.”

MSM Foundation International Women’s Day High Tea

What an inspirational afternoon we had at our 2022 MSM Foundation International Women’s Day High Tea. Our Guest Speaker, MSM Alumni, Clare Brown (2004), shared her incredible story of her time working in Africa and the Middle East as a Human Rights Lawyer, focusing on gender and women’s rights. We were also joined by 2021 Dux of the College, Jasmine Armstrong who inspired us to #BreakTheBias. Clare and Jasmine are the true definition of a MSM Graduate, demonstrating competence, confidence, compassion, conscience and commitment.

P&F ‘WELCOME TO MSM’ EVENT

Thank you to our P&F President, Natalie Chadud and our P&F Association for hosting the 2022 P&F ‘Welcome to MSM’ event at Walkabout Creek. It was beautiful evening and a lovely way for our new parents to meet one another.

MusicFest1 - Glam Rock

The Sophia Centre was abuzz with excited audience members, eager to experience the delightful entertainment that is MusicFest.  Many had taken up the theme’s challenge to express their inner glam rocker, adorned with sequins, they toe-tapped along to the many admittedly slightly cheesy repertoire items, including such favourites as “Space Oddity” in a fabulous a capella arrangement performed by MSM Singers. A true highlight was seeing the joy on the faces of the new generation of MSM musicians including the Year 7-8 Choir in their rendition of “Best Day of my Life”. Congratulations to all performers on a wonderful evening. A great night was had by all.

Around the College
We hope that you enjoy our snapshot of life at MSM during Term 1 and the commencement of Term 2!
Valentine’s Day Outreach
This Valentine’s Day, MSM turned pink and purple! Our community dressed up on 14 February in support of Micah Projects Wellsprings Program for Young Mothers. Together, we raised enough funds to purchase 2592 nappies for Brisbane families in need.
Music Soiree 1
Year 12 Music and Music Extension students delivered a varied and exciting program presented at our Music Soiree 1 livestream event. Students had been studying how music traditions have been challenged, further developed or reconceptualised to represent, reflect and even shape cultural, societal and technological change. Repertoire ranged through music theatre and popular songs to flute, violin and piano solos.
MSM Swimming Carnival
MSM ran a modified swimming carnival that saw our competitive swimmers battling it out in the pool. The day was a fantastic display of house spirit and swimming talents.
Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday Fundraising
Our MSM family enjoyed delicious pikelets with Nutella or jam to mark Shrove Tuesday, the final day before the season of Lent.

MSM students and staff marked Ash Wednesday with our first ever Rice Day. In solidarity with the 1 in 3 people in our world (2.37 billion people) who do not have enough to eat, our students purchased a simple meal of rice and water. All proceeds were directed to the MSM Project Compassion Appeal, which supports people in crisis around the world.

CaSSSA Swimming Carnival
We were incredibly proud of the MSM Swimming Team’s results at the 2022 CaSSSA Swimming Carnival, but we were especially proud of all the young women who represented us. Their commitment, perseverance, grit and passion is immeasurable. We were #MSMPROUD taking home first place in the Percentage Cup and first place in the All Age Relay.

National Close The Gap Day
MSM stood in Solidarity with our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Brothers and Sisters on National Close the Gap Day. Our Social Justice Council coordinated awareness-raising initiatives, including the wearing of ribbons in the colours of the Aboriginal flag, a sticker campaign and posters to educate our community about this important national day.
ExtravaCANza
Our wonderful CAN groups hosted their first ExtravaCANza Market for 2022. Students were tempted by a number of fabulous stalls, some with an Easter theme, and others highlighting important Social Justice issues through their wares. All money raised went towards our Term 1 Mission projects: Micah Projects and Project Compassion.
Easter Liturgy
Our Mt St Michael’s Community gathered on the final day of Term 1 for a special Advent and Easter Liturgy. This year, we reflected on Jesus’ Passion and Resurrection through the contemporary lens of the experiences of First Nations Australians.  In this year where our School theme focuses on our core value of Justice, it was a powerful, contemporary and hopeful retelling of Jesus’ story.

Inter-house Cross Country Carnival
The College came together as a whole school community for the Inter-house Cross Country Carnival! It was a wonderful afternoon for all students to compete or participate in the fun run to promote house spirit. Congratulations to all of our competitive runners and those awarded Age Champions!

ANZAC Liturgy
Our community gathered on Friday to mark ANZAC Day with a special liturgy and wreath laying ceremony. This year, our ANZAC Reflection featured special ANZAC stories from our members of staff who have family members who served or are currently serving in the Armed Services.
