Orientation Day
In Term 3 we welcomed the Year 7 2023 students for their Orientationmorning. It was the first time since 2019 that we were able to welcome students and their parents/caregivers to the College on-site. Thank you to our College Captains, Georgina and Eden, and Year 7 students, Zel and Tilly, who addressed the audience regarding life at MSM from a student perspective. A special “thank you” to the Year 7 and 8 Choir who performed so beautifully for our guests. It was a wonderful morning that was well received by the families.
Spirit Of The Arts Festival - ELPIS

Oh…What a Night! Recently we hosted our first twilight “Spirit of the Arts Festival” in three years!  There was an energetic buzz around the College grounds and even a light shower of rain could not dampen the atmosphere. We were treated to an evening of first-class entertainment provided by our Music, Drama and Dance curricular and co-curricular students.  The Visual Art displays showcased the diverse talents of our students who utilise so many different mediums and I witnessed many “gasps of awe” as parents and grandparents viewed the exhibitions. The evening concluded with an amazing “Closing Spectacular” entitled Pandora’s Box written by Linda Statham, our Director of The Arts. This item brought together the Year 8, 9 and 10 Dance Classes, the Co-Curricular Dance Team and Performance Ensemble, Drama classes in Years 8, 9, 10 and 11 accompanied by music by the Percussion Ensemble and Years 7-8 Choir and College Choir. The Year 10 Art students also featured. I acknowledge the work of Lauren (MSM Alumni - Class of 2021) and Year 12 student, Emily W for their original compositions which were part of the musical backing in the closing piece. I continue to be impressed by the level of excellence that our students bring to this event. I am so proud of them!

Events like this don’t just happen. It truly is a community event.  Firstly, I extend my thanks and congratulations to Linda Statham, Director of The Arts, and our arts staff Miriam Townsley, Danielle Mulcahy, Megan Paterson, Chelsea Humbler, Madonna Kelly, Leah Mustard (Drama pre-service teacher), Teresa Seminara, Lani Weedon, Cara Coombe, Pettina Bateman and our music conductors.  Thank you for bringing out the very best in our students!  Secondly to our staff who assisted behind the scenes – our maintenance team (Kevin Gately, Mark Donaldson, Michael Davidson and Ahmed Sultan), Adam Watson for his Sound and Lighting support, our marketing team Danielle Ferris, Fleur Kelly and Paula Ovenden.  I would also thank staff who assisted with supervision, Janelle O’Neill, Jo Howe, Paula Brydon, Paege Bellett, Amrita Moss, Claire Hatchman, Sally Crothers and Sue Wiseman.  Finally, thank you to our parents who assisted in the running of the P&F Association Bar.

Thank you to all who attended and supported this marvellous event!

Mary Aikenhead Day
During Term 3 we celebrated Mary Aikenhead Day, one of the most important dates in our school year. Our day commenced with Fr Dang Nguyen celebrating Eucharist with us. It was wonderful to see so many students actively participating in our celebration through activities such as the processions and readings. Our Eucharists are always enriched by the sharing of the talents of our music, dance and drama students. Thank you for your amazing contributions! I would also like to thank the staff who support behind the scenes in so many ways to ensure that our Eucharist is a special community event. Thank you to Ms Simpson for her overall organisation of the day
Around the College
2022 Music Camp
The Music Camp was a great musical education experience for the 120 students who attended. After many happy years at Duchesne College UQ we had the excitement of a new venue out in the beautiful bushland surrounds of BCCC Brookfield.
CaSSSA Cross Country Carnival
On Tuesday, our committed cross country athletes attended Nudgee College to compete in the CaSSSA Cup Cross Country Carnival. Congratulations to our team on winning the CaSSSA Percentage Cup for the fourth consecutive year and for achieving outstanding results in each age group as well as individual performances. After an extended and very long season, a huge amount of commitment and sheer grit, our MSM cross country team did us #MSMProud in every way!
Brain Bee Competition
Year 9 students Collete and Holly competed in the second round of the Brain Bee competition. After achieving success in the first round, Collette and Holly were invited to visit the Queensland Brain Institute at the University of Queensland. Along with nearly 50 other students from around Queensland and the Northern Territory, they completed the second-round quiz and had an invaluable opportunity touring research labs and speaking to current researchers on their ground-breaking research in the fields such as neurodevelopment and neuropathology. Congratulations Holly and Collete for your exceptional achievement.
Year 10 Dance All Shook Up
Year 10 Dance students began the term with an energetic musical theatre jazz workshop with Dom from Mad Dance House. Students perfected dance skills and then learnt a stylised Elvis routine from the musical All Shook Up. Focusing on characterisation and strength, students were challenged both physically and mentally. Super work Year 10 dance students!
Year 7 POS-ED
This week, our Year 7 cohort focused on the character strength of appreciation of beauty. 7D and 7B spent their Positive Education lesson on the Convent Lawn sketching things around them that were beautiful. The students noted that this was an important value as it helped them reflect on the important things in their life and that there is beauty in everything.
Ronald McDonald House
Thank you to the many MSM students and staff who volunteered to decorate a Red Boot in support of Ronald McDonald House Charities and the 2022 Red Boot Hoot charity event, their largest fundraiser of the year. These famous decorated ‘Boots’ which feature prominently on each table and are sold at the end of the night to help raise funds to support seriously ill children and their families. We are happy to report that our decorated boots have been delivered to the RMHC and will be up for auction at this weekend’s event.
QUT Science & Engineering Challenge
MSM Year 9 and 10 students put their STEM skills to the test at the Science & Engineering Challenge at QUT. The students worked in small groups and competed against groups from other schools to build bridges, mars rovers, bionic hands, water turbines and more. At the end of the day, the students were thrilled to place second overall in the competition.
Sports Aerobics
Recently our MSM aerobics teams competed in the Junior Challenge competition at Moreton Bay. Congratulations to all MSM competitors on their efforts leading into this event and their performances and overall high standards representing MSM at this event. Missions Of St Vincent
The Missions of St Vincent group have continued the tradition of making dragonfly keyrings that are given to the women who attend the ‘Dragonfly Retreats’, as part of the ministry run by Sister of Charity, Sr Christine Henry. These retreats provide an opportunity for women from rural and remote areas to gather together, share stories and experiences, provide support and a listening ear and most importantly have some fun.
Sisters Empowering Sisters
During August, Sisters Empowering Sisters and Interact are collaborating to bring the Think Pink drive to MSM. This drive will focus on the collection of period products, underwear and washers to help alleviate the burdens of period poverty for many disadvantaged people in Australia. We challenge students over the Ekka break to THINK PINK and buy a product they could donate to the drive. To inform our understanding of period poverty, SES watched the short film 'Period. End of Sentence.' in their meeting recently. Help support us this August and THINK PINK!
MSM's Got Talent
Recently MSM’s Got Talent helped raise funds for Weemala while showcasing the talents of students from across the school. Congratulations to our Senior School winner Emily (Year 11) and our Middle School and overall winner Sophia (Year 9). A huge thanks to all of the performers, the judges and the staff who made this possible.
Queensland Catholic Schools and Colleges Musical Festival
It was fantastic to see the return of live performances for the Queensland Catholic Schools and Colleges Musical Festival at Villanova College on 11-14 August.
Our five CAN groups displayed creativity and enterprise in developing their market stalls, all of which were food themed this term! Congratulations and thank you to all of the students involved for their generosity and hard work. Raising money for Weemala

Book Week at MSM
Our Book Week culminating activity was MSM READS where the whole school stopped to read a book of their own choice during extended homeroom time. Two lucky homerooms, 11C and 7E, got to experience MSM READS in the Library, with the addition of hot chocolate and marshmallows, accompanied by a sweet treat and a “Dreaming with eyes open” bookmark.

Model UN
Congratulations to Year 12 students Stephanie and Sophie who have been representing MSM at the Evatt Competition, a high school Model UN competition. As captains of our Model UN group at school, they have proved themselves to be outstanding diplomats and leaders, coming fourth place at the State Finals. This places them into the National finals in Adelaide this December. We wish them the best of luck and can’t wait to hear about their future ventures in the world of international politics.
