What a fantastic start to Term 4!  There is a sense of celebration and transition in the air!

The Commissioning of our 2022 Student Leaders was the focus for our Assembly on the first day of term.  This ceremony officially recognised the handover of many of the leadership responsibilities to the 2022 Student Leaders.  The SLT of 2021 presented a candle, a symbol of Christ’s guiding light – a light of courage, unity, strength and commitment, to the SLT of 2022 who accepted the candles, pledging to continue to nurture our values and share their gifts with the MSM Community. Our 2021 SLT also shared their reflections about 2021 and with gratitude thanked the special people who had supported them on their leadership journey.

The Year 12 Mother-Daughter Garden Party was held on Friday 8 October re-imagined with moving the outdoors (our traditional venue being the Convent Lawn) to the indoors (of the Sophia Centre) as we modified the event to comply with the current COVID restrictions. This event also introduced our Year 12 students to the Alumni Association.  It was also wonderful to acknowledge so many of our mothers who are Alumni of MSM and now have a second generation in the family!  Thank you to the members of the Alumni Executive, Anne O’Keeffe (President), Kate Taylor (Secretary), Alice Spies (Treasurer) and Carey Strong (Committee Member) who assisted with the set up and pack up for the event. Thank you to the members of the String Ensemble and two Middle School Dance Ensembles who provided us with entertainment.  Thank you to Danielle Ferris (Director of Marketing, Communications and Development) who coordinated the event. And thank you to the many MSM staff who assisted behind the scenes – your support is greatly appreciated!

The Year 12 students this week have been celebrating their “final 5 days” of school and preparing to move into “independent study” mode next week.  We hold our Year 12 students in our thoughts and prayers as they prepare for the external exams which commence on Friday 29 October. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Year 12 Classroom Teachers and the Curriculum Leaders for their ongoing support of the Year 12 students in their academic endeavours.

Our thoughts and prayers are also with our Year 11 students who have commenced their Unit 3 studies.
Co-curricular Celebration Assembly
The Co-curricular Celebration Assembly was held on Tuesday 12 October. This was an opportunity to recognise and congratulate students on their commitment and achievements in the College’s Co-curricular program in the areas of Academic, Cultural and CAN activities. Congratulations to all students who received awards – we are very proud of you! We also commissioned and presented badges to our 2022 Co-curricular Captains and thanked the 2021 Co-curricular Captains.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank all MSM staff, coaches, trainers, conductors, and accompanists who have been involved in our co-curricular program this year.  Without your dedication, students would not have the opportunities to be involved.  A special thank you to Mrs Statham, Director of The Arts, for her overall coordination of this assembly.  Thank you also to all staff who assisted behind the scenes.
Sports Celebration Breakfast
This morning we had 256 staff, students and guests attend our Inaugural Sports Celebration Breakfast.  Congratulations to our 2021 Sports Captains, Audrey Tighe and Ellie Brockwell, for their great work leading this event. Congratulations to all students who were awarded with Gold, Silver or Bronze Awards.  Our guest speaker, Jacqui Bell, provided an inspirational address. Thank you to Ms Kay Roy (Director of Sport) for organising this event and to Ms Kath Page for her tireless efforts.  Thank you also to all MSM Staff and coaches who have supported MSM Sport this year.
UHLsport Girls Soccer Final
On Monday night our soccer team won the UHLsport Girls final.  This knockout competition is the premier U19 independent school soccer cup competition in Queensland. Last year’s champions, Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School, were hot favourites, but they were outplayed by the speed of our girls who had a convincing 4-0 win.  It was an exciting match and great to see so many parents, students and staff at the game to support our team.  Congratulations, girls..we are so proud of you!

MSM Celebrates
We are looking forward to MSM Celebrates which will be held on Thursday 21 October in the Sophia Centre commencing at 5:00pm and concluding at approximately 7:00pm.  This year invitations have been sent via email to the parents/caregivers of the students who are receiving awards.  It is very important that these parents/caregivers respond if they are intending to be present at the ceremony. The event will also be live-streamed, and this link will be sent to parents/caregivers closer to the event next week.

In faith and love,

Sharon Volp

Year 12 Final Five
To joyfully mark the final week of classes, Year 12 students were able to make small changes to their uniform as part of the ‘Final Five’. Each day there was a theme and for the 2021 seniors these were:

Monday’s MSM on the Green - students had a supervised dance party on the Convent Lawn ‘green’ and wore tutus and crazy socks.

Tourist Tuesday - students donned Hawaiian shirts and leis and had old-school cameras to accessorise the look.

Wild West Wednesday - students wore their best country attire including checked shirts and cowboy hats.

Tie-dye Thursday saw an explosion of colour with students wearing a tie-dyed item of clothing over their uniform.

And to finish the week, Fluro Friday - wearing their brightest fluro outfits, there was a flurry of fantastic colour amongst the cohort.

The College would like to wish the Year 12 students all the best for their upcoming external exams.

Hospitality

Year 12 Hospitality students completed their final assessment last week. After many limitations due to COVID they were finally able to host a lovely function for their parents. The students put together a wonderful High Tea which was served on the Convent Lawn. The event was a great success with the girls receiving many positive comments from those who attended. Well done, Year 12 Hospitality!
Visual Arts in Practice
Year 11 LightenUp Product and Year 12 Spaces Unit

Year 11 Visual Arts in Practice students have each created an illuminated pendant light as their FIA3 LightenUp Product. Student designs communicate the concept of self with motif and design elements. Their lights demonstrate skills in 3-dimensional wireframe assemblage and delicate layers of paper cut detail to manipulate the direction and effect of light.
Mikayla Rose
Ashleigh Ritter
As part of their Spaces Unit, Year 12 Visual Arts in Practice students completed a photographic folio of images exploring historical and modern architecture from the local community. In addition, raw photos from their portfolios were further enhanced through post-production techniques in Photoshop to improve the quality of the image and/or develop it into another artwork.

Parents are reminded, for the safety of everyone, to DROP students off in the LOADING ZONE area outside the Ionian Centre and avoid areas marked with yellow lines which is against road safety rules. This is dangerous as it blocks other driver’s visibility and obstructs cars from moving around.
Onsite parking in the College grounds; Grantuly, undercover in the Ionian Centre and within the campus near the Sophia Centre is only permitted for staff. In consideration of our neighbours, please refrain from parking across driveways, adhere to the 40 km speed limit and be considerate of those living around the College when dropping and picking up students. Please do not drop off or pick up students within the College grounds.

In consideration for our neighbours, where possible please avoid leaving your motor running, especially when parked outside a home.
