Mary Aikenhead Day
Today, our College community came together to celebrate Mary Aikenhead Day, honouring the life, vision and legacy of Venerable Mary Aikenhead, foundress of the Sisters of Charity. Through prayer, reflection and community activities, students and staff were invited to embrace her spirit of compassion, justice and service to others. As a Mary Aikenhead Ministries school, we are inspired by her example to live with courage, kindness and a commitment to making a positive difference in our world.
It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our shared heritage and the values that continue to guide our community each day. Mary Aikenhead Day also provided a special occasion to give thanks for the people who enrich our College community through their dedication and service. This year, we proudly recognised Dr Caroline Taran and Ms Kelli Dick for their 10 years of service, and Mr Michael Davidson for an outstanding 30 years of service to MSM. We also celebrated the generosity of those who have supported the College Foundation’s Light the Way Capital Campaign, as Fr Gerry blessed the heart plaques purchased by our valued donors.
ACEL Queensland Excellence in Educational Leadership Award
We are delighted to congratulate Ms Janelle O'Neill, Program Leader – Strategic Projects, on receiving the prestigious 2026 ACEL Queensland Excellence in Educational Leadership Award. This honour recognises educational leaders who have made a significant and lasting contribution to education, educational leadership and improved student outcomes.
Ms O'Neill's award reflects her outstanding leadership, commitment to professional learning, and contribution to teaching and learning both within our College and across the wider education community. Through her service, leadership and educational scholarship, she continues to make a meaningful difference to the lives of students and educators. We warmly congratulate Ms O'Neill on this well-deserved recognition and thank her for the significant contribution she makes to our College and the broader profession.
Semester 1 Principal's Awards
This week, I had the pleasure of presenting Principal’s Awards for Academic Excellence and Excellence in Commitment to Learning for our Year 5 and 6 students. These awards celebrate not only outstanding academic achievement, but also persistence, diligence and a commitment to personal growth. I look forward to recognising students in Years 7–12 over the coming weeks and celebrating their achievements with our community.
Year 6 Canberra Tour
Our Year 6 students recently returned from an enriching and memorable Canberra Tour, where they deepened their understanding of Australia’s history, democracy and national identity through a range of engaging educational experiences. Students visited many of our nation's most significant institutions and landmarks, including Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial, the High Court of Australia, Questacon and the Australian Institute of Sport.
Beyond the educational opportunities, the tour provided valuable experiences that strengthened friendships, fostered independence and created lasting memories. We are incredibly proud of the way our students represented MSM throughout the week and thank the staff who supported this important learning experience. In particular, I extend my sincere appreciation to Ms Katie Jordan, Mrs Alison Larkings, Mrs Kate Marsh and Mrs Monique Wilde for their commitment and care in accompanying our students.
Finally, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to our parents and caregivers for their continued partnership with the College. As we undertake Year 10 SET Plan interviews and Year 12 post-schooling pathway discussions, we are reminded of the importance of working together to support each young person's aspirations and future goals. We value the trust families place in us and appreciate their engagement in these important conversations as we guide students towards the next stage of their educational and career journeys.

Catholic Education Week: A Mission, Responsibility and Privilege
This week, as we celebrate Catholic Education Week, we are invited to pause with gratitude for the gift of Catholic education and the important role it plays in the lives of our students, families, staff and broader community.
Catholic Education Week is more than a celebration of schools. It is a celebration of mission. At the heart of this mission is the commitment to educate the whole person: intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, socially and morally. As a Catholic school community, we seek to nurture young people who are capable, compassionate, courageous and hope-filled, and who come to know their dignity, recognise their gifts, and understand the contribution they can make to the world.
The last fortnight has been ablaze with students branching out and exploring their strengths in the co-curricular space at MSM. We had four teams make it through to the QDU debating finals, with two teams moving through to semi-finals. My sincere gratitude to Mr Andrew Saunders and his team of coaches for their dedication to honing our girls’ skills of intelligent argument. An additional thanks to Ms Nicola Crawford, Mrs Nikki McGregor, Mrs Jo Devenish-Meares and Ms Atkins who have supported our debating students.
We have also had our ‘Future Problem Solvers Lockdown’, with our teams preparing for the qualifying round of the national competition. This international program develops and challenges students in skills of Critical and creative thinking, Research and analysis, Ethical decision‑making and Collaboration and communication. Again, a special thank you to Mrs Jo Devenish-Meares for opening the door to such an extraordinary opportunity for our girls.
Our Arts co-curricular has been igniting culture with our Drama Club students experiencing the ‘Scene Project 2026’ which is a multi-year level, non-competitive, student-driven extension experience that encourages creativity, collaboration, and engagement with live theatre. Thank you to Miss Bernie Ryan and Mrs Madonna Kelly for keeping the dramatic arts alive for our MSM students.
Not to be outdone, our incredible Sports Department are facilitating the highly anticipated ‘Athletics Camp’ this weekend where our CaSSSA team members are supported to grow individually as an athlete, whilst simultaneously contributing to the cultivation of a cohesive and competitive team. Mrs Kay Roy continues to excel in nurturing authentic relationships, leadership and spirit in offerings such as these. We thank her, Ms Tesch and Ms Klowss for the commitment of their time and enthusiasm.
This year’s Catholic Education Week theme, “Share Your Light, Inspire Others”, speaks beautifully to the heart of our work at Mt St Michael’s College. Every opportunity presented within and beyond the classroom walls acts as an investment in inspiring our students to identify, share and appreciate their unique gifts. It also connects meaningfully with our own Mary Aikenhead Day celebrations, when we honour the story, spirit and charism that continue to shape who we are as a College community.
As a Mary Aikenhead Ministries College, we hold a particular responsibility and privilege in this mission. We are shaped by a tradition of love, justice, compassion and hope, and by the spirit of Mary Aikenhead, who encouraged others to “Serve God with a great heart and a willing mind.” These words continue to challenge and inspire us. They remind us that education is not only about what students learn, but who they are becoming.
For us, the education of girls is both a privilege and a sacred responsibility. We seek to form young women who are confident in their own worth, attentive to the dignity of others, and committed to using their gifts in service of the common good. We want our students to grow not only in knowledge, but in wisdom, not only in confidence, but in conscience.
Our ongoing commitment to continuous improvement is an important expression of this mission. It asks us to keep reflecting honestly and generously on how we can better support learning, wellbeing, belonging and excellence. This commitment is not about change for its own sake. It is about remaining faithful to our purpose: educating the whole person and responding with care, courage and hope to the young people entrusted to us.
Year 11 Leadership Retreat
Our Year 11 students recently enjoyed two lovely and very full days away from MSM. Our annual Leadership Retreat marks the commencement of the formal leadership discernment process, where each Year 11 student reflects on the gifts and strengths that they bring to leadership, and what qualities and dispositions they are looking for in future leaders.
The retreat allowed many opportunities for teamwork, problem solving, creativity and ingenuity. It was wonderful to watch as the girls stretched and challenged themselves, encouraged others and amplified the voices of those who don't always have the chance to speak.
A highlight of this special experience was a powerful liturgy that focused on the light that shines in each person.
In our many conversations, it became clear that this is a group of students who hold high expectations for their leaders. They value openness, inclusion, respect and care. I have no doubt that they will lead our community capably and faithfully!
Please keep our Year 11 students in your prayers as they continue to discern. We look forward to commissioning our SLT and the Class of 2027 at our Leadership Commissioning Liturgy on the final day of term.
Mary Aikenhead Day
Today, on Mary Aikenhead Day, we celebrate the life and legacy of the remarkable woman who established the Sisters of Charity. Mary A, as she is affectionately called at MSM, and the generations of Sisters who followed in her footsteps, have left a legacy that we are very proud to carry forward.
We gathered this morning to celebrate Eucharist with Fr Gerry Kalinowski. Following the traditional lunchtime treat of house cakes, the whole school engaged in service activities to support our many charity partners. Our Year 5 students assembled colouring-in packs for the Starlight Foundation, our Year 9 students hand sewed hundreds of tiny felt hearts for St Vincent's Health, our Year 10 students packed emergency birthing kits for women in developing countries and our Year 12 students made graduation gifts for the seniors at Red Hill Special School... and I could go on! At the end of the day, our wonderful students created more than 2000 items for people in need, demonstrating our community's steadfast commitment to carry on the work started by our Sisters. I would like to thank my marvellous Mission Team -Mr Clayton Kelly and Ms Sharon Harman - and our wonderful staff for making today possible!
Flourishing in a Digital World
Supporting young people to flourish in an increasingly digital world is an important part of our wellbeing and Positive Education approach at Mt St Michael's College. Recently, a number of our wellbeing initiatives have focused on helping students develop the knowledge, skills and judgement required to engage with technology safely, responsibly and in ways that support their learning, relationships and future opportunities.
Recently, six of our Year 11 students represented the College at the Venerable Mary Aikenhead Oration Virtual Round Table, Optimistic or Overwhelmed? Young People, Technology and Human Flourishing. Alongside student leaders from Mary Aikenhead Education colleges across Australia, they explored questions relating to technology, ethics, leadership and human flourishing, considering how young people can engage with emerging technologies in ways that support dignity, wellbeing and positive relationships. We are incredibly proud of the way our students represented the College and look forward to seeing them share their learning with others.
These conversations complement the learning taking place across the College through our online safety and digital citizenship programs. Year 9 students recently participated in workshops focused on digital privacy, online security and digital footprints, while Years 10 and 11 explored personal branding and transferable skills through the Be Social Be Smart program. Year 12 students further developed these concepts through the creation of professional LinkedIn profiles and an exploration of how digital networks can support future study and career opportunities. Together, these programs equip students with practical skills to build digital resilience, protect their online presence and prepare for future pathways.
A key message across all of these experiences is that technology should be used intentionally and responsibly. Just as we encourage students to act with integrity and respect in person, we also encourage them to demonstrate these qualities in online spaces. Developing positive relationships, making sound decisions and contributing positively to communities are skills that extend well beyond the classroom and into every aspect of students' lives.
This expectation also extends to students' behaviour in the wider community. I would like to thank the many students whose conduct consistently reflects the values and expectations of our College, often resulting in positive feedback from members of the public. We remind students that when they are in College uniform, they represent Mt St Michael's College and are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that reflects our community standards. We appreciate the support of families in reinforcing these expectations and encouraging students to make positive choices both online and offline.
As we continue through Term 3, we look forward to helping our students develop the confidence, capability and character required to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

All students in Years 7–10 are required to submit their 2027 subject preferences through the Web Preferences online portal.
Each student has received an email from noreply@selectmysubjects.com.au, which includes step-by-step instructions for completing selections following the relevant subject information sessions. Please ensure all subject selections are submitted by 8:30am on Thursday, 6 August.

Attendance at School
Regular school attendance is crucial for your daughter’s academic progress and personal growth. If your daughter must be absent during term time, please submit a written request for approval to Ms Collier via her Executive Assistant Ms Elmer, who can be contacted on melmer@msm.qld.edu.au.
While we appreciate the importance of family time and occasional commitments, prioritising attendance is essential—particularly during assessment periods.
Extension Requests for Assessment
If your daughter is unable to complete assessment due to illness or unforeseen circumstances, she may request an extension.
Please note:
- Family holidays taken during term are not grounds for extensions, as per QCAA guidelines.
- Students in Years 7–9 should contact Ms Larkings (Program Leader - Middle School).
- Students in Years 10–12 should contact Mrs Kean (Program Leader - Senior School).
- All extension requests must be submitted at least 48 hours before the assessment due date.
If your daughter is unwell, her priority should be to rest and recover. Upon her return, she can access class materials via OneNote and collaborate with classmates to catch up on any missed information. Should she need an extension, she should contact the appropriate Program Leader.
Absences on Assessment Days
If your daughter is absent on the day an assignment is due, she is still expected to submit her work digitally using the method specified by her teacher.
If she is absent on the day of an examination, she will be required to complete the exam during a supervised catch-up session as soon as possible upon her return to school.
Year 6 Term 3 Leadership Positions
At our Junior School Assembly on Tuesday, we had the pleasure of acknowledging our Year 6 Term 2 Class Captains (Josie, Eilish, Audrey M and Olivia D) and MSM Cares Leaders (Amelia and Sahana). Their willingness to serve others, support both the Year 5 and 6 students, and model our College values has made a meaningful contribution to the life of the Junior School.
We were also delighted to announce our Year 6 Term 3 leaders:

Year 5 and 6 Parent-Teacher Conferences
The Year 5 and 6 Semester 2 Student-Led Conferences will be taking place in Week 4, on Tuesday 4 August and Thursday 6 August. These will be “in-person” interviews, taking place in the Year 5 and 6 classrooms. We would like for students to attend this round of interviews with their parents. We will be asking the students to take an active role in reflecting on, and discussing, their Semester 1 learning and engagement with their parents and teachers. Additionally, students will identify goals for improvement or progress for Semester 2.

FRENCH CLUB BASTILLE DAY STALL
MSM’s French Club marked Bastille Day with its highly anticipated annual Pain au Chocolat stall. Students and staff enjoyed warm, chocolate-filled pastries, which were the perfect treat on a cold winter’s day. This year, all proceeds are donated to Emmanuel City Mission in South Brisbane.

YEAR 9 JAPANESE
Year 9 Japanese students enjoyed a hand-roll sushi lunch! Working in groups, students planned the types of hand-roll sushi they wanted to create and selected their own ingredients. They then experienced the traditional Japanese style of temaki sushi (hand-roll sushi), where each person creates their own sushi using seaweed, rice, and a variety of fillings before rolling and enjoying it.
Similar to a sushi version of tacos, this interactive meal allowed students to customise their creations and explore Japanese food culture in a fun and engaging way. Some students also practised making traditional sushi rolls using sushi mats. It was a wonderful lunch filled with cultural learning, creativity, and delicious food.

YEAR 8 BUSINESS IKEA EXCURSION
Year 8 Business and Economics students attended an IKEA excursion as part of their Unit 2 assessment. The visit provided students with the opportunity to investigate how a large, successful business responds to real-world challenges by examining its store layout, marketing strategies, pricing, sustainability initiatives, and customer experience. Students collected primary data that will support their business report and develop their understanding of how businesses adapt to changing market conditions, allocate resources, and remain competitive.
The assessment requires students to Austify an existing IKEA product for the Australian market, considering Australia's unique demographic characteristics and climate. Using observations and evidence gathered during the excursion, students will justify how their chosen product can be adapted to better meet the needs of Australian consumers while addressing a current business challenge facing IKEA.
Students should be congratulated on their outstanding behaviour, active participation, and enthusiasm throughout the day. They represented the College with pride and demonstrated maturity, respect, and a strong commitment to learning.

SES - SHARE THE DIGNITY
SES welcomed volunteers, Di and Margaret from “Share the Dignity” to our meeting this week. As a woman’s charity, “Share the Dignity” distributes period products to women, girls and menstruators who are experiencing homelessness, fleeing domestic violence or doing it tough. When someone is doing it tough, the last thing on their mind should be dealing with their period.
Our speakers informed us that 63% of menstruators have struggled to afford period products due to cost and that 64% of menstruators were not well educated on menstruation before their first period.
SES is running a Period Product Drive. “Think Pink” in Weeks 7 and 8 (August 24 – Sep 4) of this term where we will be asking students in Years 7, 8 and 10 to donate period products. We will then deliver these to “Share the Dignity.” We want to help ensure that everyone enjoys menstrual equity – a dignity that many of us take for granted.

ST JOSEPH'S BARDON UNDER 8S DAY
A mix of Year 9 and Year 10 students had a wonderful time volunteering at the St Joseph’s Bardon Under 8s Day, helping to create a fun and engaging experience for young children and their families. Our students enthusiastically ran a range of activities, including face painting, clay creations, bead making, and robotics, to name just a few. It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to demonstrate leadership, service, and community spirit while making a positive contribution to the day’s celebrations. We are proud of the enthusiasm, kindness, and initiative they displayed throughout the event.

CURRICULUM MUSIC EXCURSION
Our Year 8–12 Curriculum Music students recently attended QSO’s The Music of Video Games at QPAC. Through iconic soundtracks from games such as The Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy, Hollow Knight and Super Mario, students explored how music supports storytelling, creates atmosphere and serves a specific purpose within interactive media.
A fantastic opportunity to connect our studies of music with a narrative and music with a function to a live orchestral performance.

FUTURE PROBLEM SOLVERS
MSM’s 16 Future Problem Solvers attended the Queensland Resource Day workshop focused on the theme of video games in preparation for their Qualifying Lock-Up in early August. Students were inspired by industry experts and worked alongside fellow FPS teams to investigate the challenges and possibilities that video games may create for the future. It was a fantastic opportunity to think critically, collaborate, and develop innovative solutions to complex real-world problems.

We congratulate our team of Year 5 and 6 students who represented MSM at the Marist College Ashgrove Bright Sparks Invitational STEM Competition. YEAR 7 JAPANESE
Year 7 Japanese classes recently enjoyed making “kyaraben” or character bento. The practical purpose of kyaraben is straightforward: children who are reluctant to eat certain foods are more likely to eat them when they arrive in the form of a character they love. A child who resists vegetables may happily eat them when they form part of a scene from their favourite show. Our students created visually appealing characters and ate their veggies!

YEAR 5 JAPANESE ACTIVITY
Year 5 students enjoyed playing Fukuwarai, a traditional Japanese New Year's game in which players placed facial features on a face while blindfolded.
Before the game, students learned Japanese position words so they could guide their blindfolded partners to place the eyes, nose, and mouth in the correct positions to complete the face.
Students showed great enthusiasm and thoroughly enjoyed the activity while learning about Japanese language and culture in a fun and engaging way.

Congratulations to all of our MSM Aerobics teams on their outstanding performances at the FISAF State Championships. Their dedication, commitment and hard work throughout the season was on full display, and we are incredibly proud of their achievements.
A special congratulations to our Year 7 team, Determination – Addy, Georgia, Harlee, Freya and Lydia – who finished second in their category, securing qualification for the National Championships in September.

JUNIOR SCHOOL CaSSSA GALA DAY
Year 5 and 6 students had the opportunity to participate in their first Sports Gala Day for the year. Teams of students enjoyed competing in touch football games at the CaSSSA Primary School Gala Event. They learned new touch football skills, showed great teamwork and put in an impressive effort representing MSM on the day. All other Year 5 and 6 students participated in active games and recreational activities at Dorrington Park, including soccer skills and AFL rotations. It was a day filled with fitness, friendships and fun!

YEAR 10, 11 & 12 DANCE EXCURSION
Our Year 10, 11 and 12 Dance students recently attended Three, Australian Dance Collective’s annual season of contemporary dance works by guest choreographers.
The performance challenged students through three innovative and thought-provoking works that explored contemporary ideas and perspectives through movement. The creativity evident in the choreography, production design and performance sparked rich discussion amongst students about the role of dance in responding to modern social contexts.
A particular highlight was the opportunity to participate in a Q&A session with both the choreographers and company dancers. Students asked insightful questions about the choreographic process, the use of improvisation in developing movement material, and how artists shape works that challenge audiences to think differently.
The experience provided valuable inspiration for our young choreographers, who left with plenty to discuss and reflect upon. We look forward to seeing how these ideas and creative processes influence their own choreographic works in the months ahead.

THEATRE PERFORMANCE EXCURSION
Recently, a group of Dance, Music and First Nations students had the wonderful opportunity to attend Bangarra Dance Theatre’s latest production, Sheltering, at the stunning new Glasshouse Theatre.
The performance featured three distinct works, including an incredibly clever dance film that showcased innovative storytelling through movement. Students were particularly impressed by the striking set design and the imaginative use and manipulation of a net throughout the performance.
The excursion provided a valuable opportunity for students to experience a world-class contemporary First Nations performance, deepen their appreciation of the performing arts, and be inspired by the creativity and artistry of one of Australia’s leading cultural companies.

Library and Information Week 2026: Truth be Told
This year’s Library and Information Week theme explores how libraries help communities question, verify and better understand information in a world shaped by misinformation and disinformation.
At MSM Library our display invites students to test their information literacy skills by deciding which images are real and which are fake. Using black light torches, students reveal the hidden answers in invisible ink (simple mix of water and laundry liquid). A fun reminder that truth is not always easy to see at first glance.
Book Week 2026: Book Parade 25 August
As part of our Book Week celebrations, students are invited to take part in the Book Week Book Parade on 25 August. This year, students may dress as characters inspired by fairy tales, nursery rhymes or favourite books. Fairy tales and nursery rhymes form a true “Symphony of Stories” because they bring together rhythm, repetition, imagination and voices from across generations. Each tale and rhyme adds its own note to the larger music of storytelling. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes across three levels: Junior, Middle and Senior, with two categories in each level: Best Individual Costume and Best Group Costume. Costume guidelines will be shared in the Daily Notices leading up to the event.

QUEENSLAND JUNIOR GIRLS TABLE TENNIS SELECTION
Congratulations to Year 6 student, Sahana who has been selected in the Queensland Junior Girls Table Tennis Team and will be proudly representing Queensland at the 2026 National Junior Championships, putting her just a step away from potential selection to play for Australia. This is an incredible milestone for her, and we are so proud of the dedication, hard work, and commitment she continues to put into her sport.
STATE CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
Congratulations to our MSM athletes who proudly represented the College at the State Cross Country Championships in Toowoomba!
Despite the cold and windy conditions, all three students competed strongly, making the most of the opportunity to compete against some of Queensland's best runners.
Results:
- 13 Years: Mila – 21st overall and 3rd Metropolitan North athlete
- 13 Years: Sienna – 29th overall and 5th Metropolitan North athlete
- 14 Years: Faye – 30th overall and 6th Metropolitan North athlete
Well done to Mila and Sienna who raced as part of the Metropolitan North 13 Years Girls Relay Team, achieving an outstanding 3rd place in Queensland, earning a bronze medal.
We are incredibly proud of the students' achievements and the way they represented MSM throughout the competition.
LIGHT THE WAY HEART PURCHASE
Thank you to the families who have supported our Light the Way Capital Campaign. Today we blessed our newest donor heart plaques at our Mary Aikenhead Day Mass. These heart plaques are now proudly displayed on our legacy wall.

Students from our school have recently undertaken, an education tour of the national capital. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage, and democracy.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding to our school in the amount of $90 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
