Yesterday, August 8, was the feast day of St Mary of the Cross MacKiIlop – Australia’s first saint. She was strong, determined, honest and dedicated to what she believed in. When Mary witnessed families living on the margins without access to education, she set up a school in an old stable to teach children herself - regardless of their gender, race, faith or wealth. Mary inspired the hearts of those around her. Mary and her Sisters of St Joseph went wherever the need was the greatest, serving with love and compassion. One of her inspiring quotes that speaks to our College theme this year is “Let no obstacle deter us from proceeding with courage”. Let us demonstrate compassion and courage as we support each other as we journey through Term 3.
Congratulations Meg!
Congratulations to Meg Harris (Class of 2019) on her outstanding performances at the Paris Olympics, achieving a gold medal and two silver medals in the pool. As a student, Meg was humble about her achievements and led by example. Her CaSSSA 50m freestyle record still stands. The look of surprise on her face when she realised that she had hit the wall in second place in the 50m freestyle event in Paris is an image that will stay with me for a long time. In an interview poolside after the event she said “You always go out there with the hope that you’re going to do your best”. She certainly did this! We are so proud of you, Meg!
CaSSSA Cup Athletics
Tuesday morning at Assembly, Ms Roy introduced our CaSSSA Cup Athletics team who will be competing on Monday. It has been a long campaign for our athletes – in the last week they attended their training camp, competed in a meet on Monday night and then backed up for training on a drizzly Tuesday morning. These students proudly represent MSM and we wish them all the best for Monday. Go MSM!
Queensland Schools’ and College’s Music Festival
I would like to wish our various choirs, bands and ensembles all the best for the Queensland Colleges’ Music Festival which will be held at Villanova College from 15-18 August.
The Co-curricular Music program is an important area of MSM life. Our music students make a yearlong commitment to their performance area which includes weekly rehearsals and performances at various events both at the College and external to the College. I have great admiration for the talents of these students and delight in watching them perform.
Thank you to Ms Townsley and the music staff for all the effort that they have been putting in to prepare our students for this special event. I look forward to sharing their success stories in the next edition of The Spirit.
In faith and love,
Sharon Volp
Parent – School Partnerships
Parent-school partnerships foster positive relationships that significantly enhance student learning and wellbeing. These collaborations are centred on student needs and driven by a shared commitment to making a meaningful impact on our students’ education. Key elements of these positive partnerships include:
August is a busy month for our Mission, Formation and Outreach programs. Here is a small taste of some of the wonderful activities and initiatives that have been running at MSM in the last fortnight.
Year 8 Retreat
On Monday our Year 8 students enjoyed a wonderful day of reflection, prayer and friendship at their annual Retreat day. Using the characters and story of the film Frozen, our students reflected on the ways that they can cultivate courage, kindness, positivity and happiness in themselves and each other. Our time together finished with a powerful liturgy, where the students anointed one another, tracing the shape of a heart on the hands or cheek of another person and naming the strengths that they bring to our community. In our Catholic Christian tradition, anointing is a beautiful symbol of welcoming and affirmation, signifying that a person belongs to us. Sincere thanks to Ms Conway, our Year 8 Pastoral Team, Ms Brydon and Ms Vacher for their excellent work at the Retreat.
MSM Chop & ExtravaCANza
As we continue to work towards our fundraising target for Project Raise the Roof, I would like to congratulate our Year 12 students for their involvement with the MSM Chop. In what I have dubbed the “CHOPtravaCANza”, our Year 12 students and CAN Groups combined efforts to host a mega-market day featuring food, music and games. 39 seniors took part in this year’s Chop, cutting or shaving their heads to raise funds for Project Raise the Roof. All hair, lovingly grown over the course of a year, was donated to the Ponytail Project to be made into wigs for people undergoing treatment for cancer.
Fundraising for the MSM Chop will continue for two more weeks, and we look forward to announcing the total funds raised later in the term. If you would like to support the students in their endeavours, you can make a donation via the payment portal on our website.
I would particularly like to thank and acknowledge our wonderful College Captains Mia and Adelaide, and College Mission Captains Chiara and Anabelle, for their leadership of this year’s Chop. My thanks also goes to the Class of 2024 for so beautifully responding to the challenge of our 2024 theme Compassion: the courage to look, the courage to act.
SJC News: Luminous Lantern Parade
On Saturday evening, students from our Social Justice Council represented the College, walking in Multicultural Australia’s Luminous Lantern Parade. MSM has proudly attended the parade for many years and was honoured to walk again this year, carrying the beautiful MSM Blouse Lanterns created by Ms Bateman. The parade was a festival of colour, music and light, featuring performers from many different countries who now call Australia home. I thank Mr Beavon, Ms Carey, Ms Parsons, Ms Wiseman and Ms Vacher, and our wonderful SJC students for their attendance at this important event.
Environment Group News: Micah Shoe Drive
The MSM Environment Group has partnered with Micah Projects, Tread Lightly and the Marist Ashgrove Environment Group to launch a shoe drive. To reduce the number of serviceable shoes going to landfill, the Environment Group is calling on MSM families to clear out their cupboards and donate enclosed shoes to this drive. All shoes of good quality will be donated to Micah Projects, where they will find a loving second home with a person in need. Shoes that cannot be salvaged will be donated to Tread Lightly for recycling. Donations can be dropped into the labelled bins on the Mezzanine level of the Sophia Centre.
SES News: Think Pink Drive
Our Sisters Empowering Sisters have launched their annual Think Pink Drive in aid of Share the Dignity. Period Poverty continues to rise and 1 in 5 Australians have been unable to afford period products at some point in their lives. Share the Dignity aims to provide sanitary products to people who are vulnerable. Throughout the month of August, SES is inviting students in Years 7-10 to donate sanitary products (pads, tampons, menstrual cups or thin washers), using the baskets in their homerooms. In 2023, MSM donated more than 600 items to Share the Dignity, and we hope to meet or exceed this total this year!
Wellbeing and Leadership
At Mt St Michael’s our beautiful students are blessed with many opportunities to embrace the challenge of leadership. Our Positive Education program offers this privilege and responsibility to our Year 11 students who undertake Coaching with their Year 7 buddies. This year Mrs Paula Brydon has introduced a Leadership Forum for interested Year 10 students which focuses on identifying and developing the characteristics of positive leadership. In addition, we have the formal leadership roles in Year 12 who participate in bespoke Coaching sessions with renowned practitioner, Kate Wilkie. We consider the intentional development of compassionate and confident leaders as part of achieving the goal of flourishing, both for individuals and our community.
Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself.
When you become a leader, success is all about growing others.
Jack Walch, CEO General Electric
We are currently in the midst of the discernment process for the 2025, centenary year, Student Leadership Team. As is always the case we have a plethora of outstanding young women who have expressed their commitment to the MSM community and put themselves forward as nominees. We wish each of them all the best of luck in this undertaking and anticipate both a wonderful 2025 SLT and cohort of leaders to take us into the next 100 years of MSM.
Bus Fare Reminder
Brisbane Bus Lines have made several complaints regarding Mt St Michael’s students not paying fares when catching buses to and from the College. Although it is understood that from time to time a Go Card might be forgotten or not topped up, the frequent evasion of fares is not an acceptable behaviour, nor does it align with the values of the College. I would ask that parents speak to their daughters about the importance of honesty and paying for goods or services regarding their bus travel. If your family is experiencing financial difficulties and is legitimately unable to pay bus fares, please contact a member of the College Leadership Team to seek support.
INTERACT CONFERENCE
Our MSM Interact Executive, Ellen, Georgia, Finlay and Astrid, had the opportunity to attend the Interact District 9620 Conference. The theme for the day was “What would my hero do?”. They heard from inspiring guest speakers, including mental health ambassador Kevin Humphreys DSC. They also networked with other Interact Club members and Rotarians from around South East Queensland. They have returned to the College with lots of inspiration for how they can continue to serve our community.
CRAZY HAIR & CASUAL DRESS
MSM got a little crazy recently swapping our usual neat ponytails for mega scrunchies, hair art, ribbons and wigs, as our seniors helped the community to get excited for the MSM Chop. Funds raised went to Project Raise the Roof, helping one Australian trapped in slavery to transition to safe housing and dignified work.
BE SOCIAL. BE SMART.
Recently, our Year 11 and 12 students attended an insightful presentation by Sally Dwyer from Be Social. Be Smart. Sally offered the students practical advice on leveraging social media to build positive and professional online profiles as they consider their path post high school.
LIBRARY OLYMPIC HUB
Students have been experiencing all the excitement of the Paris Olympics with the MSM Library being the College Olympic Hub. Students didn’t miss a thing with Olympic coverage streaming, activities and competitions. MSM Athletics Captains Elli and Lily joined the competitors in a friendly lunchtime game of Match the Flag and Ping Pong Toss.
FRENCH
The Year 10 French class sampled some classic French cuisine at Miss Claude's Crepes. From savoury to sweet, with toppings such as Nutella, caramel, chocolate and even Biskoff, everyone agreed it was truly délicieux!”
Earlier this week our Year 12 students began the countdown to their graduation. With less than 100 days left of their MSM student experience, our 2024 Seniors are making sure to create amazing memories each day.
MSM'S GOT TALENT
Thank you to MSM’s Interact CAN group who coordinated the annual MSMs Got Talent. Entrants from across the Middle and Senior School entranced the audience with their talented performances. Congratulations to our Middle School winner Elise who wowed the crowd and our Senior School winner Bridget with her stunning rendition of Taylor Swift’s “Forever and Always”. Thanks to the gold coin on entry, all proceeds went to this year’s mission project Raise the Roof.
JAPANESE
Congratulations to our Language students of Japanese who competed in the MLTAQ Brisbane Japanese Speech Contest held at Griffith University. Jessica V placed 2nd in Year 12, Eloise B was 4th in Year 8 and Highly Commended awards were given to Ada C (Year 8) and Ashleigh P (Yr 9). Yoku dekimashita (well done)
DANCE
Dancing our way to stronger connections! 🌟 Year 8 Dance were thrilled to have “Bring A Plate” - a Community Dance Company visit us to run workshops on the amazing benefits of community dance. Thank you for showing us the power of movement and togetherness!
WIND AND PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE CONCERT
Thirty-two MSM students joined Marist College Ashgrove for a Wind and Percussion Ensemble Concert at the Draney Theatre. The performance highlighted the impressive skills of our young musicians and the successful collaboration between the two schools. Members of the MSM Concert Band joined Marist Wind Symphony 1, and MSM Percussion Ensemble performed two of their pieces that they are preparing for the upcoming Catholic Colleges Music Festival (QCMF). It was a wonderful evening of music, enjoyed by all who attended. Thank you to everyone who made this event possible!
Thank you to Marist College, Ashgrove for sharing the following photos.
MUSIC SOIREE 3
An appreciative audience attended Music Soiree 3 in the Ionian Centre Auditorium to hear our Music students perform. The performances ranged from Rock bands to Ragtime, from clarinet Solos to classical vocal and flute duets to favourites from Musical Theatre. The students gain so much confidence from these small audience performances. It was a treat to see our Senior Music students performing their accomplished and well-rehearsed pieces for assessment. A big thank you to our dedicated Music teachers for providing this opportunity for the students.
VILLAPARK Q7’S RUGBY
Last Friday, five MSM teams competed in the Villapark Q7’s competition. While our teams are still learning the game, their improvement in each competition is outstanding. Well done to every single player for their courage to learn and grow in this game and we look forward to what is to come from them in the two remaining competitions.
ATHLETICS CAMP
The annual Athletics Team Camp provided a weekend filled with friendship, training and fun for our athletes as they prepare for the upcoming CaSSSA competition. Our team had the great privilege of having Glynis Nunn (Gold medal winning Olympian) join them for two of their training sessions. Glynis shared her story and what she believes are the keys to success in today’s world. We thank Glynis and our coaching crew for their insights and their inspiration offered to our students at camp and at every training session in preparation for the CaSSSA competition. Best of luck to our MSM team! #MSMProud
Congratulations to Grace in Year 8, who competed as part of the Queensland 15 & Under Girls Hockey Team who won the Gold Medal at the Australian Schools Championships on the Gold Coast.
Thank you to our MSM families who have purchased a heart in support of our Light the Way Capital Campaign.
Funds raised will be used to support college initiatives, ensuring that future generations of Mt St Michael’s students can receive the very best education.
All donations are tax-deductible and heart plaques will be mounted and blessed on Mary Aikenhead Day.
