Term 3, Edition 12 - 15 Aug 2025

As we continue to reflect on our recent centenary celebrations, I would like to share with you some of the lovely messages that we have received from some of the Sisters of Charity.

We Sisters of Charity congratulate you and all who have gone before you on this wonderful milestone.  May God shower wonderful blessings upon you now and always.
Sr Laureen rsc and the Sisters of Charity.

A belated thank you for the wonderful celebration I was able to participate in for MSM 100 year celebration. It was a joy to be with you and feel the welcome, care and kindness of the MSM community. The mass was a joyful thanksgiving for those 100 years and all who had contributed to the wonderful school MSM is. The choir was beautiful and Tully’s reflection was a lovely touch. The dinner was also very enjoyable with great company.
I will treasure the delightful bookmark – such a lovely thoughtful added touch.
Thank you to all involved in the celebration – may you be blessed for your generosity.

Sr Anne Taylor rsc

Year 7 2026 Orientation Morning

On Thursday we welcomed the Year 7 2026 students and their parents/caregivers for their Orientation morning. Students learned of their House allocation and made some new friends, while their parents/carers were addressed by members of the College Leadership Team, Ms Conway (Year 7 Pastoral Leader) and Mrs Alison Larkings (Program Leader – Middle School). Mrs Kay Roy (Director of Sport) and Ms Linda Statham (Director of the Arts) shared with information regarding our sporting and co-curricular programs with students and parents.  Student voice was an important part of our morning with Year 7 Homeroom Captains, sharing some of their experiences to date and our 2025 College Captains, Ava and Ellen shared some reflections on their time at MSM.   There was a wonderful “buzz” of excitement in the Sophia Centre and we look forward to getting to know our newest members of our community at the upcoming “Welcome to MSM Family Interviews”.

 CaSSSA Cup Athletics
At Assembly on Tuesday Ms Roy introduced our CaSSSA Cup Athletics team who will be competing on Monday. The team are well prepared having participated in lead up meets and attended their training camp.  We congratulate the team on their commitment to date and we wish them all the best for Monday.

Queensland Schools’ and College’s Music Festival
I would like to wish our various choirs, bands and ensembles all the best for the Queensland Colleges’ Music Festival which is currently being held at Villanova College and will continue until Sunday.

It was such a delight yesterday to hear our Middle School Choir perform at Year 7 2026 Orientation morning.  They performed with such joy and sounded amazing!

The Co-Curricular Music program is an important area of MSM life. During our Student Free Days on Thursday and Friday this week, our Music students have been participating in their final rehearsals, demonstrating their commitment to our music program. This year it has been wonderful to extend our program to include our Year 5 students, who are very excited to be representing MSM at QCMF.

Thank you to Ms Townsley and the music staff for all the effort that they have been putting in to prepare our students for this special event. I look forward to sharing their success stories in the next edition of Spirit.

In Faith and Love,
Sharon Volp

COLLEGE LEADERSHIP TEAM
Dance Showcase
Congratulations to the Year 12 Dance students for completing their recent assessment in front of a live audience. Through their performances, they used dance to express personal meaning and emotion, choreographing pieces inspired by their own experiences. The students explored themes such as human connection, letting go, kindness, the fear of leaving school, and character traits. This showcase highlighted not only their technical skills but also their creativity and emotional depth, demonstrating the power of dance as a form of personal expression and growth.
Social Media Minimum Age
From 10 December 2025, the Australian Government has introduced legislation requiring age restricted social media platforms. This initiative aims to protect young people and support parents in overseeing their children’s health and wellbeing.

MSM will be working with the recommendations made for education. Further updates and information will be communicated as we navigate this new requirement. For guidance on online safety and parental support, please click on the eSafety Commissioner link, for more information for parents.

CaSSSA Athletics Carnival
Our athletes are well prepared for the Catholic Secondary Schoolgirls’ Sports Association (CaSSSA) Cup Carnival taking place on Monday 18 August. There’s a genuine sense of anticipation and pride as our talented squad gets ready to give their all, cheered on by the enthusiastic voices of our Year 7 students.

Thank you to our dedicated Athletics coaches and sports staff, whose tireless commitment and encouragement have helped our students reach their best. The CaSSSA Carnival is always a special day, not just for the competitions but for the spirit, camaraderie and joy it brings to our school community. We wish all out athletes the best.
Venerable Mary Aikenhead’s call to her Sisters to “never act contrary to justice and truth – and may we be guided by charity in all our actions and words” echoes as true today as it did then for not only the Sisters but for all of us who are part of Mt St Michael’s College and the various entities of Mary Aikenhead Ministries. Over the last few weeks, the College community have been engaging in both service outreach and formation opportunities that invite us to be living witnesses of justice in our world. With eyes that notice, hearts that care, and hands that serve—we are hope in action.

Year 9 Retreat
Monday’s Year 9 Retreat invited students to walk in the footsteps of Mary, embracing her spirit of compassion and service of the poor. Through the course of the day, our students reflected on Mary Aikenhead’s radical call to live out this fourth vow and engaged with several service organisations to develop their understanding of the Catholic Church’s commitment to social justice and call to service. Centred on James 2:1 – 4 (mercy triumphs over judgement) the Year 9 students moved through a series of interactive workshops with Eat Up, 1000 Kindness Project for St Vincent’s Health and explored the work of the Romero Centre with a presentation on the plight of refugees and asylum seekers. The day culminated with a closing liturgy where students, through both the symbolism of a paper boat and their non-perishable food donation to the Romero Centre, offered a prayer for refugees / asylum seekers and displayed an act of welcome and hope.

A big thank you to Mrs Kelly (Year 9 Pastoral Leader) and the Year 9 Homeroom Teachers who were actively involved in either running a session or co-journeying with the students on the day.
Year 9 Sleepout: A Night of Compassion and Connection
On the evening of 8 August, 34 Year 9 students and five dedicated staff members came together in the Sophia Centre for the annual Vinnies Sleepout. This immersive experience, facilitated by the Vinnies Youth team and members from St Johns Wood/ The Gap St Vincent de Paul Conference, offered students a powerful opportunity to deepen their understanding of homelessness and social justice in our local community.

Through storytelling, empathy-building activities, and thinking outside the box strategies, students explored the realities faced by those experiencing homelessness and sort to consider ways we as a united community can work to solve this crisis. A simple meal of noodles/rice and fruit reflected the evening’s message, followed by heartfelt conversations with local Vincentians. The night concluded with reflection and prayer, as students and staff settled in for a night on the floor with a piece of cardboard—symbolically stepping into the shoes of those without shelter.

The feedback from both students and facilitators was overwhelmingly positive, with many describing the experience as “eye-opening” and “deeply moving.” We are grateful to our Vinnies partners and all who supported this meaningful initiative, which continues to inspire compassion and action in our community
Centenary Art Competition
As part of the College's centenary celebrations, 58 art entries from both staff and students were submitted into the Centenary Art Competition. These entries, from the Junior, Middle, Senior and Staff age groups, provided original insight on one or more of the following categories: the stories that shape MSM, Mary Aikenhead and the Sisters and our four core values of Love, Hope, Justice and Compassion. Congratulations go to those students, listed below, who are special award recipients.
Think Pink – Sisters Empowering Sisters
Our Sisters Empowering Sisters have launched their annual Think Pink Drive in aid of Share the Dignity. Period Poverty continues to rise and 1 in 5 Australians have been unable to afford period products at some point in their lives. Share the Dignity aims to provide sanitary products to people who are vulnerable. Throughout the month of August, SES is inviting students in Years 7 and 8 to donate sanitary products (pads, tampons, menstrual cups or thin washers), using the baskets in their homerooms.
Emmanuel City Mission Pantry Drive – Interact and Year 10
In a heartwarming display of compassion and community spirit, the Year 10 cohort joined forces with the Interact Club to launch the Emmanuel City Mission (ECM) Pantry Drive. The initiative will not only provide much-needed supplies for ECM’s outreach but also deepens students’ understanding of service and the power of collective action. A sincere thank you to all who have and will contribute in the coming weeks—your generosity makes a real difference.

Luminous Lantern Parade- Lighting the way for Unity
On Friday 1 August, around 12 MSM students took part in the 2025 Multicultural, Luminous Lantern Parade at South Bank. It was an incredible evening, with glowing lanterns lighting up the night being carried by schools, community groups, and individuals from all over Queensland.

The parade marks the launch of Multicultural Queensland Month and is all about celebrating inclusion, unity, and a sense of belonging. It began back in 2007 as a small refugee support march, and has now grown into Queensland’s largest multicultural celebration, attracting more than 40,000 people each year. A big thank you to all the students who attended and to Mr Beven, Mrs Devenish-Meares (DM), Mrs McLaughlin and Ms Wiseman for generously giving up their time and joining us. (Elsa and Kate – members of Social Justice Council)
House "Choir" Competition
The 2025 House ‘Choir’ Competition was nothing short of spectacular, a dazzling showcase of creativity, collaboration, and community spirit. Held on Stewart Day, the event brought together students and staff in a joyful celebration of music and House pride. This year’s theme, chosen by the House Captains and voted on by Year 12, was “Divas”—a tribute to powerhouse performers who’ve shaped pop music history. Each house selected a song that embodied their energy and flair: Aikenhead performed “Oops I Did It Again” by Britney Spears, Grantuly chose “Single Ladies” by Beyoncé, Rush sang “We Found Love” by Rihanna, and Stewart delivered “Break Free” by Ariana Grande.

Judges scored performances based on choreography, costumes and House colour saturation, House spirit, quality of singing, and leadership from Year 12. The competition wasn’t just about vocals—it was a full-bodied celebration of movement, style, and unity. From glittering accessories to synchronised dance moves, each house brought their unique flair to the stage. Preparation began months in advance. House Captains worked tirelessly to select songs, teach choreography, and rally their teams. Rehearsals were held during House activity periods and lunchtimes, with staff lending their support and even joining in the fun. The leadership and initiative shown by Year 12 students were especially inspiring. They not only led their Houses but also mentored younger students, ensuring everyone had a moment to shine.

A special video created by the House Captains captured the excitement and was submitted for the Spirit Page. While technical hiccups delayed its upload, the enthusiasm behind it was undeniable. More than a competition, the House ‘choir’ event was a celebration of belonging. It reminded us that when we sing together, we grow stronger together. Whether it was the bold choreography of Grantuly, the heartfelt harmonies of Stewart, or the infectious energy of Rush and Aikenhead, every house left a lasting impression.

There was an unexpected curve ball thrown when special guest Sister Cate O’Brien was invited to judge an impromptu ‘Fide et Amore’ sing off between the Houses. The Mt St Michael’s anthem has never been so passionately belted out, even if the singing quality was questionable at times. Grantuly House were victors in this surprise element of the competition, with the bonus points placing them ahead of Aikenhead and seeing them take out first place. The victory was well celebrated, however it will go down in history as a contentious win.
Congratulations to our four House Captains, Finlay, Georgia, Hannah and Ella who led with great enthusiasm and determination.

I hope the EKKA public holiday and student-free days have provided the Year 5 students with the opportunity to rest, spend time with family and recharge their energy for the remainder of Term 3.

Parent-Teacher Conferences
We are tremendously proud of the way in which the Year 5 students led conversations about their learning at the recent parent-teacher conferences. The students were able to share about their progress, achievements and goals in relation to their English and Maths learning, how they are demonstrating Positive Learning Behaviours, and how they are participating in the wider MSM community. Leading these conversations gives students the opportunity to take ownership of their learning, whilst also developing their reflection and communication skills. The Year 5 teachers and I would like to thank you for taking the time to participate in this important opportunity to discuss your daughter’s learning and engagement.

QCMF and CaSSSA Athletics Carnival
We wish all Year 5 students involved in the Queensland Catholic Schools and Colleges Music Festival (QCMF) this week the very best of luck with their performances. We also have a number of students competing in the CaSSSA Athletics Carnival this Monday. All students involved in these events have worked hard in readiness for their performances and we know they will represent the College with spirit and pride. We thank the dedicated music tutors and sports coaches who have expertly prepared our very talented students for these events.

YEAR 9 GEOGRAPHY EXCURSION
As part of their study on how Brisbane City Council can preserve and maintain Kedron Brook, Year 9 geography students undertook a field task to collect and analyse environmental data.

Among other things, students gathered data on pH, temperature, and conducted a litter audit at two locations along Kedron Brook: the upper catchment at Wahinada Park and the middle catchment at Samford.

Overall, Kedron Brook appears to be a healthy ecosystem. However, the collected data will be particularly valuable when compared to findings from a future trip to the lower catchment near Nudgee Beach, an area with significantly greater human impact. This comparison will help us understand how human activity affects the ecosystem, particularly its influence on Moreton Bay.

This fieldwork gave students practical data collection experience. Next, they will convert, analyse, and compare the field data, supplement it with secondary research, and justify their conclusions.
BULLYING NO WAY: NATIONAL WEEK OF ACTION
This year, MSM proudly participated in Bullying No Way: National Week of Action, joining thousands of schools and supporters across Australia in taking a stand against bullying. This important week provides an opportunity to demonstrate the school’s commitment to preventing bullying and building a culture of kindness, respect, and inclusion.

The theme for 2025, “Be Bold. Be Kind. Speak Up.” reminds us that it takes a whole community to address bullying behaviours, both within and beyond the school gates. Students are encouraged to be bold in standing up for themselves and others, to be kind in their daily interactions, and to speak up when they see or experience bullying. Trusted adults, including parents and school staff, are there to guide, support, and model these behaviours.

MSM Activities
Throughout the week, students engaged in meaningful homeroom activities designed to promote empathy, understanding, and respect for diversity. These activities encouraged reflection on how everyday actions can make a big difference in creating a safe and welcoming school environment.

The week culminated in a collaborative art installation titled: “Wings of Change: Our Pledge to Be Bold, Be Kind, Speak Up.” When assembled, these feathers, each with individual pledges, formed two large wings; a striking visual symbol of the collective commitment of our school community to make positive change.
Keeping the Conversation Going at Home
Families play a vital role in helping young people understand bullying and know how to respond to it.

Families are encouraged to continue the conversation at home with questions such as:
What do you think bullying is?
Have you seen it? How did you feel?
Have you ever felt scared at school because of bullying?
As well as me, who are the other adults you would talk to when it comes to things like bullying?
Have you or your friends left other kids out on purpose? Do you think that was bullying? Why or why not?
Have you ever tried to help someone who is being bullied? What happened? What would you do if it happens again?

Remind your child that bullying is never okay. Discuss safe ways they can respond and encourage them to seek help from a trusted adult (both at school and at home) if they or someone they know needs support. Together, we can help our young people be bold, be kind, and speak up, creating a school environment where every student feels safe, supported, and valued.

Recovery protocols, including ice baths, were implemented to support physical wellbeing and optimise performance. The camp also featured team-building activities, such as an outing to Top Golf, fostering a positive and collaborative atmosphere. Participants enjoyed nutritious meals, adequate rest (after training hard), and a supportive environment, contributing to memorable experiences and strengthened team cohesion.
STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS
BRISBANE PORTRAIT PRIZE

Congratulations to Year 10 student Ruby G who has been shortlisted in the Brisbane Portrait Prize - Next Gen Under 18's category, celebrating the art of portraiture with strong connections to Brisbane.

This is Ruby's Artist Statement:

'The Weight of Silence'
Acrylic paint on canvas

My artwork draws on a recent personal experience, capturing the emotional impact of receiving difficult news within a family setting. During a family dinner, my mum revealed some serious news, and I have recreated the atmosphere of fear and uncertainty that followed. The painting shows my dad sitting at the dining table with a worried, confused expression, symbolising the sudden disruption of normal life. Using a film noir-inspired palette of dark tones and stark lighting, I explore the vulnerability and emotional fragility that many families experience today. My work reflects the private struggles often hidden beneath everyday routines. The bowl of food emphasises the ordinary nature of the moment, contrasting with the heavy emotions in the scene. Dramatic lighting and shadow amplify the themes of unpredictability and emotional resilience in an uncertain world.

QLD SCHOOL SPORT STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Congratulations to Jenna C, from our Year 7 cohort, who has been selected for the Qld U12 Football (Soccer) team. She recently spent 4 days as vice captain of the Met North team at the Qld School Sport State Championships and received the Met North team player of the day award on the final day of the competition. Jenna will travel to Ballarat in October for the National Championships. We wish her all the very best.
