As we approach the end of Term 3, we start to enter a “transition time” at the College. Our Year 12 students are making the most of their final weeks at MSM. Mock exams commence on Friday 30 August. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Year 12 students during this time.

Our Year 11 students are preparing to transition into their roles as the leaders of the College. The Student Leadership Process formally began at the beginning of the term with their Residential Retreat at Coolum. At Tuesday’s assembly, six exceptional young women, Tully, Lucy, Ellen, Abigail, Ava and Sophia presented their inspirational speeches to the students in Years 7-11 and the staff. All speeches were delivered with passion and authenticity and as Principal I could not be prouder of these future leaders. Congratulations to Ava and Ellen who were announced as the 2025 College Captains to the Year 11 cohort on Tuesday afternoon.

Last Thursday we welcomed the Year 7 2025 students for their Orientation morning. Students learned of their House allocation and made some new friends, while their parents/caregivers were addressed by members of the College Leadership Team, Ms Nat McMasters (Acting Year 7 Pastoral Leader), Mrs Alison Larkings (Program Leader – Middle School), Mrs Kay Roy (Director of Sport) and Ms Linda Statham (Director of the Arts). Student voice was an important part of our morning with Year 7 students, Alice and Charlotte, sharing some of their experiences to date and our 2024 College Captains, Adelaide and Mia, shared some reflections on their time at MSM. Thank you to the students who assisted with the house activities and uniform parade. A special “thank you” to the Middle School Choir who performed three uplifting pieces for our guests. It was a wonderful morning that was well received by the families, and we are excited to welcome our newest members of our community, the Class of 2030!

On Monday 12 August our MSM Athletics Team competed in the CaSSSA Cup in what can only be described as terrible weather conditions. Our girls gave courageous performances which resulted in winning the Percentage Cup and achieving second in the Aggregate Cup -  incredible results. I commend to you Ms Roy’s article which provides a comprehensive report below. Thank you to Ms Roy, Ms Tesch, our Head Coach Eric and our coaching team for supporting our students over the many months of training.

The Queensland Catholic School's and Colleges' Musical Festival was held at Villanova College on 15-18 August.  I attended the festival on Sunday and I was delighted to be in the audience for the performances of our three choirs and our Concert Band. It was lovely to spend some time chatting with our families between items. I am so proud of our students who have committed themselves to rehearsals for months in preparation for this festival; some students participating in up to three events. Congratulations on their outstanding results:

  • Guitar Ensemble GE1A – Gold
  • College Choir CH1A(2) –  Silver
  • MSN Singers VE1A(3) – Silver
  • Concert Band CB1B (5) – Gold
  • Middle School Choir CH1B(6) – Bronze
  • String Orchestra SO1B(1) - Gold
  • Senior Strings  IE1A(2)  – Gold
  • Percussion Ensemble PE1B(2) – Silver.

Thank you to Ms Townsley and our music staff who work so hard to provide our students with this opportunity. Read more about our QCMF Music success in The Arts section below.

Last night we celebrated our annual Spirit of the Arts Festival. This year’s theme was “Epoch” and was a showcase of our co-curricular and curriculum-based activities in Visual Arts, Dance, Drama and Music. This was a wonderful community event, and I continue to marvel at the talents of our students.

Thank you to Mrs Statham (Director of the Arts) and all of our amazing teachers of The Arts who work tirelessly with our students to provide this wonderful opportunity. Congratulations to all involved!

In faith and love,

Sharon Volp

COLLEGE LEADERSHIP TEAM

This term has been filled with numerous achievements and learning experiences, including preparing for assessment, immersion in Community Action Network groups, preparing for finals in sport and performance in the Arts. It is all about commitment and passion for achieving excellence in all aspects of college life.

Co-Curricular Activities:

Debating
Congratulations to our Year 9.1 Debating Team, Sofia, Matilda, Emily, Oliva and Lyla who have debated their way to the finals. This is a remarkable achievement and a testament to their hard work, dedication, and exceptional debating skills. On the evening of the finals, our team showcased their prowess in argumentation, critical thinking, and public speaking. They faced tough competition and delivered compelling arguments with confidence and poise. As runners-up, their performance was nothing short of outstanding.

Maths Quiz
We wish students competing in the Middle School Ethics Olympiad and QAMT Year 7 and 8 Maths Quiz all the best in competitions next week.

Post Schooling Interviews
Year 12 students have reflected on their progress and discussed further goals and aspirations in their Post Schooling interviews. These interviews are invaluable in helping our students have conversations about their career goals. We thank Ms Anna Webb for her guidance through this process.

It is difficult to believe that in just a few short weeks, our Year 12 students will commence their mock exams block, signalling the beginning of the final phase of their MSM journey. The prayers and good wishes of our entire community will remain with them during the months ahead.

This signals, too, the changing of the seasons for our community. With our Year 12 students now firmly focused on their exams, it is time for our Year 11 students to step up and assume responsibility for leadership at the College. We warmly congratulate all incoming members of the Student Leadership Team for 2025, and trust that they will capably lead our College into our Centenary year.

I would like to thank our 2024 College Captains Adelaide and Mia, and our Mission Captains Anabelle and Chiara for their hard work. They have capably led our community  and have demonstrated integrity, compassion and great love.

Special thanks, also, must go to the wonderful students who led our CAN groups throughout 2024:

  • Social Justice Council: Elsa L, Keira H and Ivy D
  • Missions of St Vincent: Jess V, Sophie G and Tully C
  • Interact: Ellen F, Finlay S, Georgia O and Astrid L
  • Environment Group: Yasina E and Eboni C
  • Sisters Empowering Sisters: Zara B, Georgina O and Tully C

In the coming weeks, we will be holding elections for 2025 Leaders, and we wish them all the very best for this process.

Time to Get Flourishing!
It is with unparalleled excitement that the OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development) have replaced the education imperative of ‘Human Capital’ with ‘Human Flourishing’. After over 15 years in development, the positive psychology end point of ‘Flourishing’ has finally been acknowledged as an inarguable necessity for the future of humanity and not simply a warm and fuzzy ideal. An accepted definition of flourishing has been published by preeminent scholar Professor Tyler Van der Weele of Harvard’s Shine Institute:

“The relative attainment of a state in which all aspects of a person’s life are good,
including the contexts in which that person lives.”

(Van der Weele, 2017, Van der Weele and Lomas, 2023).

At Mt St Michael’s we are ahead of the game, having had a Positive Education Programme in place for 12 years. As a staff we are working to revitalise what we are already doing and are committed to promoting a Flourishing Community. In a recent interactive Professional Development session our staff identified what their hope was for MSM students. Below is an image of what are truly heartfelt and noble aspirations for your daughters. With teachers like this, a flourishing future is the destiny of our MSM girls.

As we approach the end of week 7, students should be starting to think about their end of term examinations. To help them prepare for these assessments, they should be creating a study schedule to allow them to revise continually to eliminate panic prior to examinations.

To create a study schedule, the first thing that your daughter needs to do is ascertain exactly what examinations that she needs to prepare for. This information is contained on her Assessment Calendar, available in Student Cafe.

When creating her study schedule, your daughter needs to clearly identify when her examinations are occurring, what her dedicated study times will be as well as include all other commitments that will have an impact on her time.

It is important to note that there is no “right” way to make a study schedule. Your daughter’s study schedule will need to be personalised based on the examinations that she needs to prepare for as well as the time she is able to devote to it. The following tips may assist your daughter to create a study schedule.

#1: Evaluate your daughter’s current commitments – Use a calendar to identify your daughter’s upcoming commitments over the next three weeks. This needs to include when she will be doing her homework, co-curricular activities as well as family commitments. This will let her see how much of her time is already committed, and what time she has available for studying. If her current commitments leave her little room for studying, she may need to evaluate what she can cut back on for the next three weeks, or what she needs to rearrange to have more open time for studying.

#2: Develop a study schedule – Now that your daughter can identify what time she has for studying, she needs to schedule her study sessions. Add her study sessions to her calendar like any other commitments. This ensures that she remembers this is time set aside specifically for studying. Use her assessment calendar and identify the subjects that she needs to study for the remainder of the term. Plan out which subjects she will study on which day, to ensure that she is devoting enough time to each subject.

#3: Remove distractions – Your daughter needs to ensure that she can focus when studying. All distractions, particularly her mobile phone, should be removed from her environment prior to commencing on her revision. Every time that she is distracted, she will need to re-engage with her revision which will have an impact on her study schedule.

#4: Stick to her study schedule – A study schedule works best when it is followed consistently. Your daughter needs to be realistic when creating her study schedule. She may have to adjust it each week, depending on what she accomplishes as well as once she has completed her examinations. Remember, the most important thing is sticking to her schedule!

#5: Maintain accountability - Some students find it helpful to study with another student, as it provides accountability, as well as opportunities for discussion and collaboration. When creating her study schedule, check with other classmates to determine if she can coordinate study sessions with them. However, if your daughter tends to socialise more than study when around others, it is recommended that she stick to an independent study schedule. If she does have a study partner, make sure it is someone with whom she is likely to stay on task.

I wish all students the very best of luck with their upcoming examinations. If they develop a study schedule and follow this in preparation for their examinations, I am sure that they will be able to demonstrate what they know and can do.
AROUND THE COLLEGE
NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK

Our 2024 UQ Science Ambassadors marked Science Week by revealing the results of the 2023 DNA Detectives research project in collaboration with UQ. MSM was one of the schools selected to participate in research using environmental DNA (eDNA) filters. Researchers at UQ extracted and analysed the filters and determined that our local (non-human) eDNA originated from species such as cow, pig, crow, cane toad, and ringtail possum. DNA from the endangered Limnodynastes peroni, the Striped Marsh Frog, was also detected on the filters, tying in with this year's Science Week theme "Species Survival: More than just sustainability". The UQ Science Ambassadors presented this to our College community on assembly and held a lunchtime of frog themed activities to raise awareness of amphibians as a critical part of nature.

AUSTRALIAN SPACE DESIGN COMPETITION

Recently our MSM students participating in the Australian Space Design Competitions submitted their entries for judging. The brief for the Seniors was to prepare a statement of work for a proposed space settlement in Mars orbit, acting as a hub for Mars surface operations and future ground settlements. The Juniors were tasked with preparing a recruitment video for the orbiting settlement in a bid to attract the best and brightest minds.

Thanks go to Mr Koning and the FTV Club for supporting the projects with the use of the College’s amazing digital facilities.

We wish the students all the very best with their submissions.

DANCE

Dance students in Years 9 - 12 recently had the privilege of attending Horizon, an awe-inspiring performance by Bangarra Dance Theatre at QPAC. This show marks Bangarra's first mainstage cross-cultural collaboration, featuring the creative excellence of leading Māori choreographer Moss Te Ururangi Patterson and Bangarra alum Deborah Brown. The performance weaved stories that honoured the mother countries of the artists, exploring deep connections to culture and the spirit that calls them home. Our students were immersed in powerful movement storytelling and were inspired by captivating set and design elements. We thank the students and their caregivers for supporting the students in their appreciation of The Arts.

MSM READS

To celebrate Library Lovers Day, MSM students were provided the opportunity to disengage from their devices and to immerse themselves in the written word, by reading for enjoyment during extended homeroom with MSM Reads.

BOOK WEEK

As part of this year’s ‘Reading is Magic’ Book Week theme, MSM celebrated with a Harry Potter Day. Students and staff were invited to wear house ribbons and Hary Potter accessories and test their Harry Potter knowledge with a Harry Potter quiz in the MSM Library.

AFTER THE SIREN WORKSHOP

MSM students recently attended the After the Siren Workshop, hosted by Griffith University Sports College. The workshop is designed for elite athletes who are working towards competing or working in sport in a professional or representative capacity. The girls heard from professional athletes about their personal experiences and a plethora of great advice was shared and received. A wonderful learning opportunity for a unique pathway in sport.

STEWART HOUSE DAY

On Tuesday 13 August, Stewart House led by House Captain, Paige celebrated Stewart House Day with the sharing of House cake. Stewart House was named after Alexander Stewart. In 1928, the Sisters of Charity purchased the Stewart family house to commence what is now Mt St Michael’s College.

MSM THE ARTS

QUEENSLAND CATHOLIC SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES' MUSIC FESTIVAL

MSM recently participated in the 33rd Queensland Catholic Schools and Colleges’ Music Festival. This year, QCMF brought together approximately 500 volunteers, 106 schools, 590 ensembles, and over 14,500 student performances from primary and secondary schools across Queensland. Over four days, students performed in seven simultaneous venues across two campuses, scheduled throughout the day and into the evenings. Mt St Michael’s eight ensembles delivered wonderful performances with strong results.

We commend our students and their ensemble directors for their commitment and effort in preparing for this event. Their hard work was reflected in the results, which are a source of pride for our College community. We also extend our appreciation to staff and students from Villanova College, and the community volunteers whose contributions were essential in making the festival possible. QCMF continues to be an important event for showcasing the musical talents of students across the Catholic Education sector, and our school is pleased to have participated once again. We look forward to future involvement and continued development of our music program.

CaSSSA ATHLETICS

Sport at MSM this term has been a whirlwind of effort, enthusiasm and participation and the results achieved along the way speak to the high levels of commitment from our students.

CASSSA Athletics was an outstanding day in so many ways. Students from all schools should be commended on their resilience and determination to compete in what was nothing short of horrific weather. But while we were all soaked to the bone, the smiles still shone brightly through the grey skies and our MSM team turned it on to take out the Percentage Cup (for the 9th consecutive year) and finished 2nd overall in the Aggregate Cup, narrowly beaten by St Rita’s College. The full list of results are below.  The MSM team have worked hard for almost two terms, with big days and early mornings, ending most weeks this term with CaSSSA Lead Up Meets at UQ.  Their commitment was brilliant and best of all, the MSM spirit again got us over the line many times.  We are so proud of every girl in this team, they all played their role so well and collectively they deserve all of the success they have earned.
