I trust that everyone enjoyed a relaxing break and have returned to MSM feeling refreshed and ready to embrace the joys and challenges of Term 4. It is a busy start to our term and I am looking forward to celebrating the achievements of our students in the many different aspects of life at MSM at our Co-curricular Assembly, Sports Breakfast and MSM Celebrates.
The Commissioning of our 2025 Student Leaders was the focus for our Assembly on Tuesday. This ceremony officially recognised the handover of the leadership responsibilities to the 2025 Student Leaders. The SLT of 2024 presented a candle, symbolising the light of Christ and a river stone, reminding our new leaders of their commitment to the mission and values of our College, especially in our centennial year. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank and congratulate our SLT of 2024, who have been wonderful role models for our students.
This afternoon, the Year 12 Mother-Daughter Garden Party was held on the Convent Lawn. We were blessed with blue skies and the jacarandas are just starting to burst into colour creating a stunning backdrop. Thank you to our Senior Strings ensemble who created a lovely ambiance with their background music. Thank you for giving up your Friday afternoon at the start of a long weekend to enhance the event.
This gathering is a special time for our mothers and daughters and is the first official event of our “Graduation” season. Thank you to Anne O’Keeffe (President of the MSM Alumni Association) who in her address officially welcomed the Class of 2024 as our newest members of our Alumni. Thank you also to Kate Taylor (Secretary) for her assistance with the event.
The Order of Australia Association, Queensland Branch, Secondary Schools Citizenship Awards 2024
On the last day of term, I had the privilege of accompanying Adelaide to Parliament House where she was presented with a Certificate of Community Service awarded by The Order of Australia Association, Queensland Branch and presented by The Honourable Paul de Jersey AC CVO KC.
These prestigious awards recognise a Year 12 Student’s commitment to their schools and the community and involves an application process addressing the following criteria:
Adelaide is a wonderful role model of servant leadership and we proudly congratulate her on receiving this special award.
Staffing Updates
We are pleased to welcome back Ms Jo Devenish-Meares (Year 7 Pastoral Leader), Ms Caroline George and Mr Peter McFadden from their long service leave. As announced at the end of last term Ms Caitlin Conway has been appointed Acting Program Leader – Middle School for Term 4 and Ms Natalie McMaster has been appointed Acting Year 8 Pastoral Leader during Term 4.
Ms Trish Greenland (Curriculum Leader – Mathematics) resigned as of the end of Term 3 to accept a promotional position at another school. We welcome Ms Jacqui Klowss as our new Curriculum Leader – Mathematics who will commence with us on Monday 14 October. Thank you to Ms Kate Borger who is assisting with classes until Friday 11 October.
I wish everyone a safe and happy long weekend.
In faith and love,
Sharon Volp
MUSICFEST2 – FIRE!
Join us for MusicFest2 “Fire!” on Thursday 7 November from 6 - 7:30pm in the Sophia Centre. The evening will be a thrilling exploration of the fiery element, with performances of Tiger, Tiger Burning Bright, Fire and Ice, How to Train Your Dragon, Inferno, and Firework. This is technically the first concert of the new year for us as we get used to the enormous contribution that the Year 12 have made to the Co-curricular Music groups throughout the year and the younger students now have to step up into leadership roles. I'm sure with their passion for music they will ensure the night will be a fabulous way to spend a couple of hours. Make sure to keep an eye out for eye-catching fire-themed accessories and we’ll see you there! This is a free event open to all members of the MSM community. No booking required.
Welcome back to students and families. We hope you had a restful break and are ready to embark on the exciting journey that Term 4 promises to be. This term is busy with many events that will engage, inspire, and celebrate our wonderful school community.
Some upcoming events over the next two weeks include:
Award recipients for MSM Celebrates will be notified next week. MSM Celebrates recognises the outstanding achievements of our students in various fields. Further information will be provided to families to help plan attendance. Your presence and support will make this event even more special for our awardees.
BOOK NOOK
The Year 12 external exams will take place within the library premises. Consequently, the MSM Library will be inaccessible during this time. We extend our gratitude to the Library and Learning Support Department for establishing the ‘Book Nook’ in room A14, enabling students to continue to pursue their love of being in the library. Students will receive further details via the daily notices.
We look forward to sharing this term with you and celebrating the many accomplishments of our students. As always, thank you for your continued support and involvement in our school community.
Feast of St Michael the Archangel
On 29 September, the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. Michael is one of three angels named as guardians of God’s people, and he is particularly acknowledged as a defender of the faith. Mt St Michael’s College was named for the Archangel by the Sisters in the 1940s. As the horrors of the Second World War raged across Europe and the Pacific, the Sisters felt that his name brought special protection to our College community. St Michael is the patron saint of the dying, bankers, grocers, police and military personnel. At this moment, as our world grapples once again with conflict and the threat of war, we call upon the Archangel to offer God’s compassion, healing and peace.
I share this prayer from the Catholic Diocese of St Petersburg:
Compassion Liturgy
Term 3 concluded with a beautiful liturgy focusing on this year’s core value of Compassion. I would like to sincerely thank the 150 students and many staff who worked tirelessly across Term 3 to bring this liturgy to birth. Special thanks goes to our 2024 and 2025 Student Leadership Teams, who capably led the liturgy, and engaged in a very beautiful ritual as part of this liturgy, passing the guardianship of our College Values to the next generation of leaders.
Commissioning of 2025 SLT
On Tuesday, our community gathered to pray for our Student Leaders for 2025. Our Student Leadership Team received their badge, along with a candle and river stone (a symbol of strength from our recent Year 11 Leadership Retreat), and the following blessing was offered:
May God bless you with courage to seek justice and peace.
May God bless you with hope and vision for a bright future.
May God bless you with love, to see Christ in each other.
And may God bless you with compassion, that you might journey forward,
mindful that you travel in deep footsteps of Charity.
Donation Drives
Across Term 3, our students generously contributed to several material goods donation drives, to support our mission partners in Brisbane:
Student Leadership Change of Guard
A very warm welcome back to school for our final term of 2024. On Tuesday we celebrated the Commissioning of the 2025 Student Leadership Team and followed this up with an afternoon tea where our 2024 Student Leadership Team had an informal handover with their 2025 counterparts. The girls exchanged stories of challenges and triumph and offered practical advice to our incoming leaders. We are looking forward to a very busy and rewarding year of student leadership at MSM in 2025.
Uniform Reminders
Upon the return to school after the holidays, it is always a good time to ensure we get the ‘little things’ right. To this end, I am encouraging girls to check that they have all the required uniform items, and that they have their names clearly marked on each item…. especially hats!
A reminder that skirts are to be knee length, that only the College (not team) sports shorts are to be worn for HPE classes and that plain white socks (not branded) are uniform regulation. The formal uniform is to be worn to and from the College, and students are required to change into and out of their sports uniform for HPE or Dance classes either at the end of the lesson or during the nearest break time.
Please assist your daughters in organising for the school week and ensuring that there is a washing routine that enables them to wear the appropriate uniform each day.
Lost Property
As we begin the new term, it is an opportune moment to remind everyone about the lost property that is currently displayed outside Student Reception. Many items, including uniforms, water bottles, and books, have been collected over the past term. We encourage students to check the lost property area for any of their missing belongings. Please take a few minutes to reclaim your lost items and help us keep our school environment organised and tidy.
Late Arrivals
Our Pastoral Leaders have been working hard to monitor and address the number of late arrivals at the College each day. Although we understand that there will be anomalous circumstances whereby a student may be late, there are an increasing number of unacceptable ‘reasons’ given. In terms of routine and effective engagement with their learning, it is essential that students arrive at the College in advance of the 8:30am Homeroom start time.
All late sign ins must be accompanied by a parent note in the diary, phone call or email to Student Reception. Any other ‘lates’ will be followed up and students will need to make up the time that they have missed. It is essential that we work in partnership to support your daughters to meet this expectation and develop positive time management skills that will serve them well now and in the future.
For the Love of Totes
At MSM we have a strong attachment to our tote bags, and they serve the wonderful purpose for girls to carry their books and stationery between classes. Unfortunately, some of our totes are put under undue pressure with additional items and quickly end up in disrepair. I would ask that girls with very worn tote bags replace them to ensure their items are not falling out the bottom or that shoulder straps are not fraying or broken. It is also important to note that under no circumstances are laptops to be carried in tote bags as they do not provide any protection from weather or activity and laptop damage caused by this will not be covered by insurance. I understand the MSM passion for the tote, however in order to protect its longevity students must restrict its use to the intended purpose.
Thank you for your support in all of the above, it is very much appreciated.
I would like to welcome students back for Term 4 and hope that they had a relaxing break! As we prepare for the final term of the year, there are a few reminders that I would like to offer.
Semester 2 Assessment Calendars
Term 4 is our shortest term of the year, and it is important that your daughter checks her Semester 2 Assessment Calendar this week to allow her to start planning her study commitments for the next 7 weeks. Mrs Kean, Program Leader – Senior School, and Ms Conway, Acting Program Leader – Middle School, spend an enormous amount of time ensuring that assessment tasks are placed at the best possible time with the due date identified clearly on the assessment calendar. I would encourage all students to look at their assessment calendar in their e-diary on Student Café and become familiar with their individualised due dates.
Year 12 Independent Study Week and External Examinations
Our Year 12 students have their final day of official classes next Friday, 11 October. In Week 3, they embark on their independent study week in preparation for their external examinations. Year 12 students are still able to contact their teachers via Teams or email if they have questions in the lead up to their external examination. If they come on campus to meet with their teacher during the timetabled double lesson time, they need to sign in through Student Reception and be in full formal uniform.
I strongly encourage all Year 12 students to familiarise themselves with the equipment they require for each of their external examinations and wish them all the very best for these important examinations.
Unit 3 Commences for Year 11 Students
Year 11 students have commenced with their Unit 3 studies this term. All assessment from this point forward in General subjects will potentially contribute to a student’s final ATAR calculation. For this reason, students are not able to change subjects across Unit 3 and 4. I am aware that there are several Year 11 students who do not have the required equipment for Unit 3. Parents are reminded that they can find the Unit 3 & 4 Stationery and Booklist requirements under the Resources for Parents link on the College website. If you have any questions about the required equipment, please do not hesitate to contact me.
MODEL UNITED NATIONS ASSEMBLY
A group of eight eager and well-informed MSM students took part in a friendly Model United Nations Assembly, where they represented Australia, the USA, Solomon Islands and China. The debate, held at Mt Alvernia College, centred around the issue of foreign debt – in particular, how the debt of developing countries should be repaid. The issue was whether debt could be manipulated in a way that ‘encouraged’ developing states to support the military and political aims of powerful nations such as China and the USA. This is very topical right now, particularly given China’s ‘Belt and Road’ initiatives so close to home in the Pacific; and was an exciting way for our students to come to an understanding about such important global affairs. Our students stood on the world stage and debated these complex issues with aplomb, and we are very proud of their efforts.
STUDY OF RELIGION
Twenty Year 12 Study of Religion students have this year achieved the extraordinary feat of achieving 100% for all three pieces of summative internal assessment. These students were congratulated at a special morning tea hosted by Ms Bow with their teachers and members of the College Leadership Team also in attendance. We are enormously proud of the effort and achievements of these students as well as so many others who have seen growth in their skills and confidence across the challenging senior Study of Religion course.
CERTIFICATE II IN SPORT & RECREATION
During Term 3, Certificate II in Sport and Recreation students have completed their First Aid certificate. This means that these students have gained competence in all units required to successfully attain their First Aid and CPR qualifications which are recognised nationally. Well done to those involved.
ART IMMERSION
The Year 11 Art students have been involved in an Art immersion with Sydney based Artist, Brett McMahon. In their all-day immersion, they worked with three discrete objects that are intended to be hung or placed together to form a poetic triptych. The students explored a subject from three different perspectives, unified in colour. This workshop and the inspiration from Brett’s work will inform their decision making for their Artwork in Year 12.
MSM Year 10 Art students embarked on a 2-session workshop where they referred to workshop facilitator and Artist, Brett McMahon’s Ghost installation, making evocative shapes from thick card which was bent and shaped. Then using ink and acrylic paint, the students wrote text descriptions of ‘place’, that were adhered to the cut shapes. The collected works will be hung in a group.
Our Year 9 Art students, referring to the World by Night series, explored ways of using a variety of tools to create marks and lines, which can later be overlaid and collaged together to create drawings that refer to the ‘residue of human action’ within the urban landscape. Thank you to Artist, Brett McMahon for facilitating this informative workshop.
SPECIALIST MATHEMATICS
The Year 11 Specialist Mathematics students were given the task of creating a signature move for a Bluey character using the graphing software GeoGebra. To do this they used mathematical equations to create the image of the character then applied their knowledge of matrices to create the animation.
BATTLE OF THE BANDS
Clairvaux McKillop College hosted the exciting Battle of the Bands event, featuring talented secondary student bands from across Brisbane. Among them was Katalyst, a passionate group of young MSM musicians who gave it their all on stage.
Band Members:
Adelaide M - Vocals
Lily M - Guitar
Taylor B - Keys/Bass Guitar
Ruby O - Guitar/Bass Guitar
Sophia W - Drums
They performed three popular songs: “Seven Nation Army”, “Supermassive Black Hole”, and “Teenage Dirtbag” at this vibrant musical event.
TOUCH FOOTBALL
At the end of Term 3 our U13 & U15 High Performance Touch Teams competed in the All Hallows’ School Touch Tournament. Despite the soaring temperatures, our teams played very well. The teams, alongside our MSM U18s Team, played over the past weekends in preparation for the All Schools Touch Football competition held this weekend. Good luck MSM!
CaSSSA GALA DAY
MSM recently participated in the CaSSSA Gala Day Rugby7s Carnival. Well done to our MSM Under 13s Division 1 Team on winning the competition! Special mention to Year 8 student Hannah who was named U13s Player of the Tournament. Congratulations also to the MSM U18s Division 1 Team who were runners up. We are #MSMProud of all five teams who competed at the carnival.
Year 11 student, Emily F recently competed in the National Junior Elite Diving Championships and Junior World Trials. She placed 1st on the 3 metre springboard and has been selected to represent Australia at the World Junior Diving Championships to be held in Rio De Janeiro at the end of November. Well done, Emily!
Thank you to our MSM families who have purchased a heart in support of our Light the Way Capital Campaign.
Funds raised will be used to support college initiatives, ensuring that future generations of Mt St Michael’s students can receive the very best education.
All donations are tax-deductible and heart plaques will be mounted and blessed on Mary Aikenhead Day.
CATHOLIC SCHOOL PARENTS AUSTRALIA (CSPA) 2024 PARENT SURVEY
ON STUDENT WELLBEING AND LEARNING
MSM families are invited to participate in the Catholic School Parents Australia (CSPA) 2024 Parent Survey on Student Wellbeing and Learning to help advise the Australian Government, the National Catholic Education Commission (NCEC) and State, Territory and Diocesan Catholic Education Offices on key issues concerning parents with children or young people in Australian Catholic Schools.
