Term 1 has been nothing short of eventful, marked by the launch of our centenary year, the arrival of our Year 5 and 7 students, NAPLAN, Swimming Carnivals, the Year 12 Theme Launch, Retreats and a Music Soirée - just to name a few. Amidst this packed calendar, students have also managed to complete classes, assignments, presentations, and examinations. Despite the disruption caused by the weather event in early March, our resilient community quickly returned to "business as usual".
It was disappointing to have to postpone the Inter-house Cross Country event due to the rain causing the closing of Dorrington Park. The good news is that the event has been rescheduled to Thursday 24 April.
I would like to thank all members of our dedicated staff for their work in supporting our students during this term. It takes a village to raise a child, and I have appreciated the work of our teachers who are passionate educators who support our students every day, but I also sincerely acknowledge and thank the non-teaching staff who do so much behind the scenes to support staff and students in all aspects of MSM life. We could not do what we do without you!
Back to MSM Reunion Day
An extremely successful Alumni 'Back to MSM' Reunion Day occurred on Saturday 22 March from 3:00 – 5:00pm in the Sophia Centre. Inspired by the display of historic photographs and uniforms, approximately 300 past students were able to reminisce about their time at MSM and marvel at the growth and success of our College today.
The program for the afternoon included an address by the Alumni President, Anne O’Keeffe, partaking in a delicious afternoon tea followed by a tour of the College. It was lovely to welcome back the two former Principals, Mrs Narelle Mullins and Ms Alison Terrey, who were in attendance for the afternoon and enjoyed catching up with past students.
I extend my gratitude to our Marketing, Communications and Development team members Danielle Ferris, Paula Ovenden, Kirrily Gofton and Francene Power for the huge effort behind the scenes in supporting this event.
Staffing Updates
It is with great sadness that I share the news of the resignations of two staff members. Mrs Sandra Mannion, Program Leader – Library and Information Services, has served our community for more than 15 years. Her love of literature has been infectious, and staff and students have appreciated her expertise in the library. Ms Mannion has been on long service leave during Term 1 and will not be returning to MSM in Term 2. Ms Amy Lee has been the caring and welcoming face of MSM in her role as College Receptionist, and her prior role in the College in the Uniform Shop. I would like to thank Ms Mannion and Mrs Lee for their valued contributions to Mt St Michael’s and we wish them all the best for their future endeavours.
We have had several staff on long service leave during Term 1. Thank you to Ms Penny Pritchard-Cahill who has been teaching in the English Department and to Ms Kirsty Scanlan for her leadership in the library. Ms Caroline Saunders who has been supporting teachers in the role of Administration – Teacher Services during Mrs Nicky Romeo’s absence.
We also thank and farewell Mr Rufin Kalo from the “Work and Welcome” Program who has been working with our maintenance team this term. We wish him all the best for the next chapter of his life’s journey.
I also extend my appreciation to Ms Natalie McMaster who has been fulfilling the role of Acting Year 9 Pastoral Leader while Mrs Madonna Kelly has been on long service leave. Next term we also welcome back from long service leave Ms Paege Bellett and Ms Rebecca Valmadre.
Ms Teresa Nicholson will be taking her well-deserved long service leave during Term 2 and Dr Mark Spanevello will be taking long service leave for the first two weeks of Term 2.
Happy Easter
As we commence holidays and prepare for Easter Sunday, I share with you this reflection from our Staff Lenten Program “Start Anew in Christ” written by Father Michael Grace published by the Archdiocese of Brisbane.
This Lenten journey has invited us to start anew in Christ. Having responded to his summons to take up the cross and follow him (Matthew 16:24), we now arrive at this day, which powerfully proclaims the new creation ushered in by Christ’s death and resurrection. As we rejoice, let us ponder: what is new about this Easter? What has God worked in you during this solemn journey? Perhaps you have discovered a new joy within yourself or a renewed hope that underpins your life. Perhaps, through Lent, you have cultivated a deeper fervour in prayer.
Even if you have found the journey challenging or are facing circumstances that make it hard to find joy in this moment, do not lose heart. Today we celebrate the light that burst forth from the darkness of the tomb. Every morning, as the sun rises, we have the possibility of starting anew in Christ.
I wish our students and their families, our staff and all members of our MSM community a happy and Holy Easter and a refreshing Easter holiday. I look forward to seeing everyone when school resumes for students on Wednesday 23 April, following the Student Free Day.
In Faith and Love

MSM FATHERS' GOLF DAY
It’s on again! Save the date for the MSM 2025 Fathers’ Golf Day on Friday 23 May at Ashgrove Golf Course. Whether you are a pro or a beginner, join fellow MSM dads for a round of golf (18 holes) followed by a presentation, post round beverage and burger on the deck of the golf club. The game will be "four ball best ball" with all abilities welcome. This event is a great chance to meet or reconnect with other college parents. Bookings will open in Week 1 or Term 2.
We have reached the conclusion of a very busy first term, which has included numerous community events and experiences. Our community has welcomed new staff and students, hosted Year 5 & 7 Parent Welcome Evenings, and conducted a Year 11 Information Evening. Our Year 11 students enjoyed their Semi-Formal, and our swimming team bonded and prepared for the CaSSSA swimming competition. Fathers enjoyed the Foundation Year 7 Father-Daughter Breakfast, while mothers and daughters gathered for the Foundation International Women's Day High Tea. Year 11 and 12 Hospitality students served tapas to their parents and staff members, and students have participated in various sporting competitions, performed in Music Soiree 1, and experienced success in debating.
Last week, we acknowledged our students who have borrowed and read the most library books. Congratulations to Year 5 students Adele (28 books), Sahana and Evie (23 books), and Isobel (19 books), as well as Year 7 students Olivia (18 books), Alice (11 books), and Ellie (10 books), and Year 8 student Alice (13 books).
As we bid farewell to Term 1 and embark on a well-deserved break, I extend my sincere thanks to our dedicated staff for their unwavering commitment and tireless efforts. I also thank our students, families, and the wider community for their continued support and collaboration.
As we prepare to commemorate the culmination of our Lenten journey, may this Easter be a time of joy, reflection, and rejuvenation for all. We eagerly anticipate the return of our refreshed and eager students on Wednesday 23 April, and look forward to cheering our students on during our postponed MSM Cross Country on Thursday 24 April, from 11 am to 3 pm.
Wishing you and your loved ones a blessed Easter filled with peace and happiness.
Year 5 Retreat
Last week, our Year 5 students enjoyed their inaugural Retreat day at the Queensland Tennis Centre, Tennyson. Using the story of Moana the students reflected on what it means to be a person of courage and hope, giving thanks for the rich connections forged during their first term at MSM and celebrating the many people (parents, grandparents, teachers, friends… and quite a few pets!) who have helped them to grow.
The students worked together to create a series of fabric squares, each telling part of their personal story. These will be stitched together to form sails and added to the special classroom prayer boats that Mr Mark Donaldson (Maintenance) is making for each classroom. The SS Hope and the SS Love will be a permanent reminder in our Year 5 classrooms of the special lessons learned at Retreat.
To finish our day together, the students participated in a special liturgy of welcome, where each student was called by name and had a handmade lei placed over her head. I would like to sincerely thank Ms Katie Jordan (Head of Junior School), Ms Kate Marsh, Ms Kate Toohey, Ms Jen Roberts and Ms Milena Barbagallo for their work on this special day.
Easter Liturgy
As is tradition at MSM, we closed our first term with a beautiful Easter liturgy that traced the final footsteps of Jesus. Powerfully brought to life by our readers, dancers, drama students and musicians, more than 170 students worked together to create a reflective and meaningful liturgy.
As we continue to reflect on our College theme, we find in Easter no better example of enduring hope. At our liturgy, we reflected on the story of the grieving women who visit Jesus’ tomb and are astonished to find that the stone has been rolled away.
Pope Francis says:
The stone marked the end of Jesus’ story, now buried in the night of death. He, the life that came into the world, had been killed.
There are times when we may feel that a great stone blocks the door of our hearts, stifling life, extinguishing hope, imprisoning us in a tomb of our own fears and regrets.
But the Gospel says that when the women looked up, the stone had been rolled away. This is the peace of Christ, the victory of life over death and the rebirth of hope amid the ruins of failure. It is the God of the impossible, who rolls away the stone forever!”
Special thanks goes to Ms Linda Statham (Director of the Arts), Ms Miriam Townsley (Program Leader Music), Ms Megan Paterson (Dance Teacher) and our Performing Arts staff for their work in supporting our students.
ANZAC Day
When we return from the Easter break, our community will pause to mark ANZAC Day. This day is of particular significance for us, given the number of Defence families who are part of the MSM Community and our proximity to the Enoggera Barracks.
We will hold a MSM ANZAC Day ceremony on Thursday 24 April at 8:50am in the Sophia Centre. And on ANZAC Day, our students and their families are warmly welcome to join us at the annual RSL Ashgrove ANZAC Day March and Service.
Students who wish to march will meet College Staff at 7:15am on ANZAC Day morning near St Finbarr’s Catholic Church, on the corner of Waterworks Road and Betheden Terrace. The march will move through the streets of Ashgrove, finishing in Ashgrove Memorial Park, where the RSL will hold an ANZAC Day Service. Further information can be found in the letter that has been emailed home to all families.
MSM Chop
Our Year 12 students are busily preparing for the 2025 MSM Chop. This year 43 students will chop or shave their hair, and the whole cohort will prepare a special fundraising market day for our community. All funds raised from this event will be donated to Project Providence, as we seek to provide two education scholarships for female students in Malawi and Nigeria. The hair will be donated to the Cancer Council to make wigs for people undergoing treatment for cancer.
Please consider donating to this worthy cause and showing your support for our students. Donations can be made via the secure Westpac payment portal on the College website here (please select MSM Chop from the menu).
Centenary Art Competition:
To celebrate our Centenary year, the College is hosting an art competition that is open to all current staff and students. We are seeking artworks that tell the story of our College, in response to one of three categories:
Winners will receive a Westfield Gift Card ($150 for Grand Prize Winners and $50 for Highly Commended), and all competitors will receive a certificate. More information can be found on Year Level Teams Channels. The competition closes at 5pm on 20 June.
Affirming and Celebrating Term One
As Term One comes to a close, we have spent some time this week reflecting on the successes we have experienced this term. We have also acknowledged the special people in our lives who have supported us this term by writing ‘thank you’ letters to them. Yesterday, the students in each Year 5 class wrote personalised, affirming messages to their peers in the other Year 5 class. These messages were written on the back of a decorated Easter egg, which were then hidden in the Convent Lawn for each student to find (Easter egg hunt-style). The girls were delighted to find their Easter eggs and special message from their peers!
Year 5 Parents 'Twilight Drinks' Event
It was lovely to see a number of Year 5 parents and caregivers at the Twilight Drinks event last Thursday. The purpose of the evening was to provide an opportunity for parents in the cohort to develop positive connections with one another. We hope that those who attended had an enjoyable evening!
Junior School Positive Behaviours for Learning Awards
Congratulations to the following students for receiving Positive Behaviours for Learning Awards at our Year 5 Assembly this week:

You also make a positive contribution to our classroom community in the way that you demonstrate care and compassion for your classmates. You are a true asset to 5 Hope.
Esther (5H) – For your demonstration of respect and resilience in all you do at MSM. You consistently show care and kindness to your classmates, fostering a positive learning environment in 5 Hope. You are commended for the respectful way that you interact with teachers and peers. Esther, you should be very proud of the way that you approach challenges with a growth mindset, and for embracing all that MSM has to offer in your first term at the College. Keep up the super effort.
Sarah (5L) – You are a respectful and compassionate learner who always finds ways to support those in need, especially through your involvement in the MSM Cares Group. Your enthusiasm for all aspects of school life is contagious, and it brings a sense of joy and energy to our classroom. Thank You
My sincerest thanks go to the Year 5 teaching staff, Mrs Kate Marsh and Ms Kate Toohey, along with our Junior School Support Officer, Ms Jen Roberts, for their dedication and enthusiasm this term. Their professionalism has been unwavering, and has ensured a smooth transition to the College for our youngest students.
I also wish to thank the Year 5 families for their support this term. It has a been a pleasure to work in partnership with you as the girls have commenced their MSM journey.
Wishing you a safe and happy holiday!
FRENCH FILM EXCURSION
Students of French from Year 9 – 12 enjoyed the comedy, “All Stirred Up” as part of the annual French Film Festival. Set in the French- Canadian countryside, we followed teenager Lili-Beth’s efforts to learn to cook under the tutelage of talented French chef, Victor, as they prepared for the Mini Chefs’ competition. Lili-Beth, her mum and Victor served up something new in this deliciously heartwarming story.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Year 7 students were lucky to spend time with Sr Cate O'Brien to culminate their Term 1 RE unit. Sr Cate shared stories from her life that exemplify courage, discernment and humble leadership in the way she has placed her life in service of the poor and of the common good. Students enjoyed making connections between Sr Cate's own story and their Term 1 learning about the life of Mary Aikenhead and the foundation of her vision in Jesus' example of serving others. Our Year 7s are keen to continue Mary's legacy by enlivening our values of Justice, Love, Hope and Compassion.
Students in the Year 7 Japanese class recently had the opportunity to create their own themed bento (Japanese packed lunch), immersing themselves in an important aspect of Japanese culture. In Japan, it is common for kindergarten, middle, and high school students to bring their own bento to school. While some opt for simple meals, others, especially younger students, create incredibly cute and artistic packed lunches.
A popular trend in Japan is kyaraben (character bento), where the lunch is designed to resemble popular anime or cartoon characters. Inspired by this tradition, Year 7 students designed their own kyaraben, using a variety of ingredients to bring their chosen characters to life. After making their bento creations at home, the students displayed their work in class and enjoyed their unique lunches together, making the experience both creative and delicious.
This activity not only allowed the students to engage with Japanese food culture but also gave them a fun and hands-on way to learn about the significance of bento in daily Japanese life.
CaSSSA Term 1 Sports
This week saw MSM teams playing in their final round of the term 1 CASSSA seasons in AFL (Seniors), indoor cricket (seniors and juniors), Volleyball (inters and seniors), Rugby 7’s (juniors) and Tennis (all ages). Unfortunately, the weather impacted many rounds of our Wednesday afternoons fixtures and some Saturdays for tennis, but the MSM spirits remained high and the girls competed well when they had the opportunities. Congratulations to our Junior 3 and Intermediate 3 tennis teams and our junior cricket team on their CaSSSA premierships this year. Well done to all students on their contributions to sport at MSM this season and also their contributions to their teams. Thanks to our large group of MSM Alumni that continues to show up for our MSM sports teams contributing not only their sports specific knowledge, but their #MSMPride and brilliant attitudes to our students so they learn and grow through wholistically each season. It is not always about the score that makes our students winners!
2024/2025 Water polo
The BMJA water polo season commenced in term 4, 2024 and concluded in this term. MSM fielded 6 teams, and all teams played quality water polo week in week out. This year, we didn’t have teams in the grand finals of their various divisions, many of our teams played off for 3rd and 5th place throughout all of the age groups. We look forward to continued improvement and involvement throughout our water polo teams in the 2025/2026 season. Thanks to our wonderful coaching team who assisted the teams with training and games each week! Thanks, parents, for your support of your daughters in their water polo adventures.
Congratulations to Year 8 student, Asha F who competed in the Queensland Representative School Sport Swimming Championships. Asha made the final in the 50m Fly individual event and her relay team won two bronze medals in the free and medley relays. We wish Asha all the best as she competes in the upcoming National Age Championships.
Thank you to our MSM families who have purchased a heart in support of our Light the Way Capital Campaign.
Funds raised will be used to support college initiatives, ensuring that future generations of Mt St Michael’s students can receive the very best education.
All donations are tax-deductible and heart plaques will be mounted and blessed on Mary Aikenhead Day.
