Term 2, Edition 8 - 29 May 2026

This week I was thrilled to share the news that construction is about to commence on our new building which is located on Amarina Avenue.

The new building will provide wonderful new facilities that will benefit all students. The bottom level of the Learning Centre will have the new College Reception Area, including a meeting room and improved sick bay facilities. A senior learning hub for students in Years 10 – 12 encompassing a senior resource centre (including access to reprographics), study rooms and flexible learning spaces will be an exciting feature of this level. The library will be located on the ground level for easy access for students in Years 5 - 9. The presentation space will accommodate a whole year level cohort providing an additional area for activities such as year level assemblies and guest speakers. The top level will be a dedicated Junior School precinct which includes four classrooms including break out rooms, collaborative spaces, and an outdoor learning area and makerspace.

To deliver these new facilities, there will be some inconvenience on site, or as I like to say a “short term pain for a long-term gain”. As of Monday 1 June, the Convent Lawn will be out of bounds for students and furniture currently located on the Convent Lawn will be relocated on our campus. Careful consideration has been given to the relocation of this furniture, including ensuring that the furniture does not block evacuation points, walkways and delivery points around the campus. Students are requested not to move this furniture.

One of the first visible activities will be the installation of fencing around the construction site. We anticipate that this activity will commence in the week beginning Monday 1 June. For their safety, students are not to enter the fenced off area. Students who usually catch the bus opposite the Ashgrove Library will be required to walk down the easement beside the Convent Lawn and across the park to the bus stop.

I appreciate your patience as we move into this construction phase. I will share further updates as we continue to meet with the builders as we prepare for the commencement of construction.

If you have any specific concerns, please feel free to contact the College through a dedicated project email address: buildingproject@msm.qld.edu.au

COLLEGE LEADERSHIP TEAM

Co-curricular Life at MSM

Co-curricular life continues to thrive at Mt St Michael’s College, with a vibrant showcase of talent across the Arts and Academic Enrichment areas.

Last week commenced with Music Soirée 2, featuring a diverse range of performances from our co-curricular music ensembles and Middle School classroom musicians. Highlights included performances from the Middle School Band, brass soloists, violinists, flautists and vocalists, demonstrating both skill and dedication.

Two evenings later, the Dance Showcase captivated audiences with a spectacular display of movement, creativity and storytelling. Performances were polished and professional, with seamless transitions both on and off the stage. The choreography reflected contemporary themes and conveyed powerful narratives with clarity and expression.

Our College Choir also performed at the Queensland Youth Music Awards and were awarded Silver in recognition of their dedication to music making and exceptional performance.

MusicFest 1 – Take to the Skies provided an outstanding celebration of our choirs and Concert Band, Strings and Guitar Ensemble coming together for a truly memorable evening of music.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to our dedicated Arts staff, IT and Maintenance teams, and the many families who continue to support and celebrate the Arts within our College community.

Academic Excellence - da Vinci Decathlon

Our students recently competed in the da Vinci Decathlon, an academic competition involving teams working across ten disciplines including Mathematics, Philosophy, Art and Poetry. With over 100 schools participating, the competition demands high levels of collaboration, critical thinking and problem-solving.

We commend our teams on their outstanding achievements:

· Year 7 – Third place in Art and Poetry

· Year 8 – Fifth place in Legacy

· Year 9 – First place in Ideation; Second place in Codebreaking; Fifth place in Legacy; Seventh place in Cartography

· Year 11 – First place in English; Second place in Cartography; Third place in Science; Fourth place in Art and Poetry and Creative Producers; Fifth place in Legacy; Seventh place in Codebreaking; Fourth Overall.

We acknowledge with gratitude the leadership of Dr Blackburn in preparing the teams, along with the support of Ms Emblem and Mrs Desailly on the day.

Academic Excellence - Senior School Ethics Olympiad

We are incredibly proud of our MSM students Matilda M, Isabella C, Laycee C, and Maggie C who represented Mt St Michael’s College at the Senior School Ethics Olympiad. Their ability to present thoughtful, well-reasoned arguments and to engage respectfully in collaborative dialogue under pressure was exemplary.

The team received an Honourable Mention, finishing just shy of the medal placings. Judges commended the depth of thinking, quality of discussion and level of engagement demonstrated throughout the competition. This achievement is a testament to the students’ intellectual rigour, teamwork and commitment to ethical inquiry.

National Sorry Day & National Reconciliation Week

This week, our community paused to reflect on National Sorry Day. We hold in our hearts all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, especially the members of the Stolen Generations, those whose children who were stolen, and the generations that followed who bear the deep scars of pain and loss. In our sadness, we also acknowledge the strength and courage of survivors. As people of charity, hope and justice, we commit to walking with them to build a reconciled Australia.

Mt St Michael's College was proud to send student leaders, members of our First Nations student group and Social Justice Council to attend this year's Teralba Park Sorry Day Ceremony. Our students listened to the stories of survivors, laid a wreath at the Stolen Generations memorial stone, and prayed for justice and reconciliation.

The 2026 National Reconciliation Week theme is "All In". It's a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation, justice and truth-telling. Our First Nations Students and members of our Social Justice Council have collaborated to develop a week of activities that celebrate First Nations Cultures and affirm our commitment to reconciliation. These activities included: Indigenous games in the Sophia Centre during lunch breaks, a colouring in competition and bookmark making in the library, and daily craft activities in homeroom time. Our First Nations Student group – The Rising Sisters of Culture – have enjoyed a number of lovely events including a movie day and the opportunity to visit the Living Library event at All Hallows’ School. We sincerely thank Ms Conway, Mr Beavon, Ms Ruddell and Mr Kelly for their support of our students.

Project Safe Haven Update: MSM Charity Challenge

Our Year 12 students have just completed a wonderful fundraising event, raising significant funds for our friends at Emmanuel City Mission through our own Project Safe Haven.

The seniors have demonstrated creativity, leadership and compassion, working together to run a week of amazing activities for our community. They named this fundraising initiative The Charity Challenge.

The week of events commenced with a substantial (and very popular!) raffle at this year’s Charity Ball. Students and their dates purchased tickets throughout the evening, and the prize winners were announced after dessert. We are tremendously grateful to our families and local businesses who donated prizes for this raffle, and to our students and their guests for purchasing tickets.

At school, the Year 12 students paid a fee to participate in a week of themed dress up days. Each day of the week was given a special focus, designed to educate about homelessness while raising funds for ECM. On Meat Free Monday, the girls hosted a vegetarian garden party. On Tired Tuesday, students in Years 10, 11 and 12 joined together to wear pjs to school, highlighting the challenges of finding a safe, warm bed. On Warmth Wednesday, the girls ran a whole-school donation drive, collecting food and warm clothing for ECM patrons. On Thrift Shop Thursday, the girls challenged each year level to visit local charity stores and dress up to meet year level theme challenges. Lastly on Fearless Friday, the girls showed what it means to be MSMProud, celebrating together with a mega-ExtravaCANza market and Just Dance competition.

This week was incredibly successful. Together the students:

· Raised an impressive $5,319.58 for Project Safe Haven

· Collected 20 large cartons of food and clothing for ECM. We estimate its value to be approximately $2000.

The cash from the Charity Challenge brings our current Project Safe Haven total to $12,638, putting us well on track to exceed our fundraising goal of $15,000. Congratulations to Ms Brydon and the Year 12 students for their wonderful work and thank you to all staff and students for their continued support of our mission fundraising work.

Year 6 Retreat

Our Year 6 students enjoyed a beautiful Retreat at Riverlife last week. We used the characters in the Disney film Tangled to unpack what it means to be a person of kindness, compassion and courage. These messages are particularly important as our girls prepare to welcome new students into their cohort in Year 7. We sincerely thank Ms Jordan and our Year 6 team for their support of the girls on this special day.

Charity Ball

On Saturday 16 May, our Year 12 cohort and their partners attended the annual MSM Charity Ball. This year we celebrated the occasion at The Westin Hotel in the city, which provided a sophisticated and elegant setting for a formal segue into the social wonders of adulthood.

All guests were impeccably behaved and proved to be supportive partners when it came to navigating the stairs in stilettos. The dancefloor certainly belonged to the girls on the night, which was a comment I did not expect the invited guests to take literally!

Traditionally, as a Charity Ball, each year our students donate a percentage of their overall expense for the night to a designated charity. This year, our students with the assistance of Ms Simpson sourced prizes and sold raffle tickets on the evening, followed by a week of fundraising activities. It was pleasing to see on the night, how generous our girls; their guests and parents were in support of Project Safe Haven. The evening was a beautiful expression of how MSM girls acknowledge their privilege as a companion to responsibility. Despite being an event punctuated by sparkle and joy, no smile outshone that of the young gentleman who won the bucket of Maltesers and very quickly became quite popular.

I would like to thank the staff who gave up their Saturday evening to attend the Charity Ball and support our students to have a night of celebration. I extend the deepest appreciation to:

  • Mr Marc Beavon
  • Ms Ros Collier
  • Mr John Hamilton
  • Dr Colleen Robertson
  • Mr Niel Robertson
  • Ms Kate Simpson
  • Ms Leah Strati
  • Ms Sharon Volp
  • Ms Natalie Wright.

I must especially acknowledge Mrs Paula Brydon, our Year 12 Pastoral Leader for her tireless efforts in managing all aspects of this event with enthusiasm and grace at all times and Mrs Tanya George for her administrative prowess and eye for detail!

AROUND THE COLLEGE

YEAR 5 GRANDPARENTS’ DAY

We were delighted to welcome our Year 5 grandparents for a very special Grandparents’ Day celebration.

The event commenced with meaningful moments as grandparents and students connected through storytelling, enjoyed a lively Kahoot quiz, and got creative together with arts and craft activities. Laughter and smiles were shared all around.

The Auditorium was filled with joy as our students performed How Far I’ll Go from Moana, sharing their voices with pride and enthusiasm.

We proudly acknowledge and celebrate the invaluable role grandparents play in the lives of our students and within our community. A heartfelt thank you to all who attended — your presence made the day so special for our youngest MSM students.

YEAR 6 GOVERNMENT ROLE PLAY ACTIVITY

Year 6 students participated in a role play of the Australian Parliament as part of their HASS learning about Australia’s system of government. Students engaged in a lively debate on a proposed Bill for an Act to limit all Australian households to one car.

RACQ DRIVER DISTRACTION PROGRAM

To help prepare our students to become safer drivers and passengers on the roads, our Year 12 students participated in RACQ’s Driver Distraction Program. They participated in an interactive lesson that explored the ever present and complex issue of distraction, discussing tangible real-world strategies that young people can apply to help protect themselves, their passengers, and other road users.

YEAR 10 ENGLISH SHAKE & STIR PERFORMANCE

Year 10 English students had the opportunity to see their Term 2 study text performed live in Shake & Stir’s adaptation of ‘Romeo and Juliet’. The show enabled students to see firsthand how directorial choices can represent characters and perspectives for modern audiences. Now they are hard at work doing the same for their assessment this term, an imaginative monologue set in a modern context that explores the concepts of Love, Youth and Devotion.

Thank you to Shake & Stir for an engaging performance!

Nikki McGregor
Curriculum Leader - English

STUDY OF RELIGION

Year 11 SOR students have begun Unit 2: Religion and ritual. Starting with calendrical rituals, students will be undertaking an inquiry into the Islamic pilgrimage of Hajj, investigating how this powerful ritual deepens Muslims' understanding of their identity, purpose and destiny.

Ellen Bow
Curriculum Leader - Religious Education

YEAR 6 VISUAL ARTS

This term, Year 6 students have been researching the meandering lines of the Brisbane River, and both the urban and natural spaces that surround the river. They have been exploring and practising, with drawing and painting techniques to create a map inspired by their research. Well done, Year 6!

YEAR 5 TOPIC TALKS

This term, our Year 5 students are developing their persuasive speaking skills as they work towards creating and presenting a speech.

To build confidence, students will take part in three Topic Talks throughout the term — beginning with Topic 1: Student Share Bag.

Students are invited to bring along a few special items that represent who they are and share their stories with the class. Well done to our students who have already shared with their class and we look forward to learning more about each of them as the term progresses.

YEAR 8 DESIGN CHALLENGE

Year 8 Design students put their creativity and teamwork to the test in a fun Eiffel Tower challenge using spaghetti and marshmallows.

With limited materials and just 20 minutes, students built impressive structures while learning about balance, design and collaboration.

Well done to our MSM students for their creativity.

YEAR 10 -12 VISUAL ART EXCURSION - ONESPACE & GOMA

Year 10, 11, and 12 Visual Art students recently had the opportunity to attend an inspiring excursion to Onespace Gallery and GOMA.

At Onespace Gallery, students viewed Marian Drew’s latest exhibition, Wild Tender Close, where they explored her thought-provoking approach to photography and contemporary art practice. The exhibition encouraged students to consider themes of transformation, nature, and human connection through a contemporary lens. Students also gained valuable insight into tertiary pathways and careers within the arts, developing a deeper understanding of art-related industries.

The group also visited GOMA to experience the Creative Generation Excellence in Art exhibition. This showcase of outstanding student work from across Queensland provided valuable insight for our students to reflect on their own artistic processes and possibilities.

This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to deepen their understanding of contemporary art practices, and gain inspiration for their own creative work as they continue their studies.

YEAR 10 ART STUDENTS EXPLORE THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE

Congratulations to Zara A and Maisie B on their successful completion of their Figure in Portrait works. As part of this unit, students were required to plan, design, and render a painting that explores the ambiguities at the heart of the human experience.

These thoughtful compositions suggest narrative through the use of signs and symbolism, while deliberately withholding full clarity from the viewer. What is left unsaid becomes as important as what is shown, creating a sense of intrigue and personal interpretation. Many works evoke a moment where time feels suspended or suggest stories that continue to evolve beyond the frame.

Well done to Zara, Maisie, and all Year 10 Art students for their creativity, insight, and dedication throughout this project.

David Gravino
Classroom Teacher

YEAR 12 MUSIC AND DANCE STUDENTS

Year 12 Music and Dance students are currently engaged in a cross-collaborative project, transforming personal memories into original performance works.

Through shared creative processes, students are identifying artistic connections, refining their creative practice, and challenging their understanding of performance-making for audiences. Students are strengthening their ability to think critically, reflect deeply, and make meaningful connections. Research shows that arts-rich learning enhances creativity, collaboration, and emotional understanding, while supporting students to become confident, connected learners.

We look forward to sharing these innovative works at our Arts Showcase in Term 3!

Acting Director of The Arts

YEAR 5 AND YEAR 9 LITTLE AND BIG SISTERS ACTIVITY

Our Year 5 and Year 9 Little and Big Sisters recently came together to acknowledge the Month of Mary through a shared prayer activity. In this special time of connection, students thoughtfully composed peace prayers, expressing gratitude and seeking Mary’s intercession for peace in their own lives and in the wider world.

SISTERS EMPOWERING SISTERS

SES were very fortunate to hear from Shirley James-Sharry who volunteers for RizeUp, a national charity organisation which provides practical support in the form of housing to people fleeing family and domestic violence. Shirley highlighted the fact that over 78,000 survivors, including 50,000 children have been assisted by RizeUp. In order to maintain confidentiality and dignity, volunteers do not ever meet the people that they are helping. MSM looks forward to partnering with RizeUp to help furnish a home for survivors who are hoping to break the cycle of abuse.

YEAR 12 & YEAR 9 DRAMA EXCURSION

Recently, our Year 12 and some of our Year 9 Drama students had the incredible opportunity to attend Queensland Theatre Company’s vibrant and soulful production of ‘The Sapphires’ at the Billie Brown Theatre.

Students were captivated by the powerful storytelling, rich cultural themes, and electrifying musical performances. For our Year 12 students, the excursion provided valuable insight into professional theatre-making and serves as a fantastic reference point for their own work. Meanwhile, our Year 9 students embraced the energy and humour of the production, deepening their understanding of audience engagement.

A huge thank you to Queensland Theatre Company for such an inspiring production, and to our students for representing our school with enthusiasm and respect.

GYMNASTICS QUEENSLAND WOMEN’S ARTISTIC SENIOR STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Five MSM students, including Bonnie, Abigail and Sierra alongside other MSM students, competed in the Gymnastics Queensland Women’s Artistic Senior State Championships, after qualifying at SEQ Regionals earlier this year.

The athletes performed strongly across all apparatus — vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor — showcasing their skill, determination and commitment.

Their MSM spirit truly shone, with the team proudly supporting one another and fellow competitors throughout the competition. It was an excellent achievement for them all, and a reflection of significant commitment to their sport and year-round training over many years.

LIBRARY

MSM Library has been a vibrant hub of creativity and reading this term, with students engaging in a range of exciting literary opportunities across the College.

We were delighted to celebrate ALIA’s National Simultaneous Storytime 2026, featuring Luna Roo: The Kangaroo Baller, with our Year 6 students. As part of this event, students designed sport shirts inspired by the Matildas and Luna Roo, creatively blending Australian pride, teamwork, and imagination. The designs were energetic and thoughtful, reflecting a strong connection between sport, storytelling, and identity.

We would also like to recognise students who contributed to the Queensland School Library Week competition in Term 1. Although our school was not selected at the final stage, we are incredibly proud of the efforts of all students who participated. We acknowledge Aubrey (Year 5) and Amelia (Year 11), who represented MSM with their beautiful interpretations of the theme Light the Way. Both students received a special art gift as a token of appreciation. Families are encouraged to view entries from across the state at QSLW: https://www.qsla.org.au/qslw

Looking ahead, our Readers Cup teams will compete next Friday in the Brisbane South regional competition. Selected students from Years 7 and 8 have been preparing since Week 6, Term 1, reading and analysing five novels in depth. We commend their commitment, collaboration, and enthusiasm as they prepare for this exciting “battle of the books.”

Happy reading!
